These 21 Songs From The Late '90s/Early '00s Are Seriously Underrated

You know you had these underrated gems burned onto your CDs.

    1. BBMak – "Out of My Heart"

    Hollywood Records / Via youtube.com

Fun fact: The band is named after the last names of the members: Mark Barry, Christian Burns and Stephen McNally. You get points if you knew that already. You get even more points if you remember the episode of Even Stevens where the band guest-starred as themselves. I love their hit "Back Here," but this song is just as great.

    2. PYT – "Same Ol' Same Ol'" (Sarai Remix)

    Epic Records / Via youtube.com

I illegally downloaded this PYT song (well, everything was illegally downloaded back then) on Napster because my mom didn't buy me HitClips. PYT? Napster?! HitClips?!? Now, that's a sentence that really takes you back.

    3. Daniel Bedingfield – "If You're Not the One"

    UMG / Via youtube.com

Fun fact: Daniel Bedingfield is the brother of Natasha Bedingfield (yes, "Unwritten" and "Pocketful of Sunshine" Natasha Bedingfield). You couldn't escape 2002 without hearing his other megahit, "Gotta Get Thru This," EVERYWHERE. Listen and reminisce on your 4th-grade crush.

    4. JC Chasez – "Blowin' Me Up (With Her Love)"

    Jive Records / Via youtube.com

Ah, JC. I was actually Team JC and Lance over JT. This song is from his first solo album post NSYNC. It was also on the soundtrack of the 2002 Nick Cannon film, Drumline. This song is peak early 2000s pop in all its cheesy glory.

    5. Kandi – "Don't Think I'm Not"

    Asylum Records / Via youtube.com

Before The Real Housewives, the ever-so-talented Kandi had this infidelity anthem to her name. She was also in the early '90s group, Xscape. 20 years later, this song remains timeless.

    6. Lindsay Pagano – "Everything U R"

Warner Bros. Records / Via youtube.com

Fun fact: This song was the theme to the short-lived WB sitcom, Maybe It's Me. It was also in a 2002 AOL commercial.

    7. No Secrets – "Skin Deep"

No Secrets is best known for "That's What Girls Do." I mean, are you even an early 2000s kid if you don't know that song? Their album was surprisingly good considering they were a bunch of tweens/teens. I really wanted the colorful jackets they wore for the album art.

    8. Vitamin C – "Smile" (Featuring Lady Saw)

    Elektra Records / Via youtube.com

"Put a smile on your face, make the world a better place." Yes, Vitamin C had other songs besides "Graduation (Friends Forever)." This song is instantly recognizable, one of those songs everyone knows but doesn't know that they know. It's probably best known for those iconic Hershey's commercials from the early 2000s. Also, I low-key want to learn the choreography from the video...

    9. M2M – "Don't Say You Love Me"

    Atlantic Records / Via youtube.com

The ultimate friend-zone song. I don't know what it is about those Scandinavians; they make the best pop music. Another one I love from M2M is "Mirror, Mirror." Fun fact: "Don't Say You Love Me" is featured in the Pokémon movie. Still not sure why.

    10. Britney Spears – "Dear Diary"

This song is the last track off her iconic album, Oops... I Did It Again. Seven-year-old me played the hell out of this song on my cassette player wherever I could... in my room, on long road trips, while writing in my diary, etc.. Good times. Do kids these days still keep diaries?

    11. Soluna – "I'll Be Waiting for You"

We got some Latina representation up in here. Their harmonies were on point, and I totally sang my little heart out to this song trying to hit the high notes. Raise your hand if you still have vocal damage! 🙋

    12. Pink – "Most Girls"

    Arista Records / Via youtube.com

OMG. This song is such a gem because you know P!nk never made songs like this again after her first album. Pink doing R&B?! She's such a badass. Her "Most Girls" tops Hailee Steinfeld's "Most Girls" any day in my book.

    13. Bosson – "One in a Million"

If any of you haven't seen Miss Congeniality, please stop reading and immediately go watch that masterpiece right now. This song plays during the iconic dance scene at the end of the film. Sandra Bullock (or should I say, Gracie Lou Freebush) is such a babe. On April 25 of this year, we should all stream the hell out of this song in honor of the film's 20th anniversary. Why April 25? Because it's the perfect date... not too hot and not too cold.

    14. Jewel – "Standing Still"

    Atlantic Records / Via youtube.com

"Standing Still" is another gem from Jewel, but let's not forget "Intuition." This song is now most likely to be heard at a CVS near you.

    15. ATC – "Around the World (La La La La La)"

Germany has Europop on lockdown (although this particular song is a cover of a Russian song). Apparently, the kids have now revived this song through TikTok. Although I still don't know how that app works, I'm just happy we can enjoy it together.

    16. Brandy – "Full Moon"

    Atlantic Records / Via youtube.com

This song makes me want to get some chunky blonde highlights, rub some Bath and Body Works body glitter all over myself, and go clubbing in a crop top and low-rise jeans. BRandy has such a sexy R&B flow that's so definitive of that era, and it really makes me miss the old days.

    17. Fefe Dobson – "Everything"

    Island Records / Via youtube.com

Before Alessia Cara, there was another Canadian girl ruling the airwaves. The breakout pop-rock singer's song, "Everything," is best known for being featured in the 2004 film The Perfect Score with Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. I may or may not have had the lyrics in my AIM away message...

    18. Samantha Mumba – "Gotta Tell You"

    Polydor Records / Via youtube.com

This song makes me want to blow up some inflatable furniture in my childhood bedroom and pretend to be in a music video. We had a lot of divas in the 2000s who really brought their A-game, but this one brought hers all the way from Ireland!

    19. Westlife – "My Love"

    View this video on YouTube

    UMG / Via youtube.com

Although Westlife wasn't super well-known in the US, you should all give them a listen because their vocals and melodies take you away to the green fields of Ireland. Fun fact: This song was a HUGE hit in Korea. In May 2018, popular K-pop singer, Eric Nam, performed this song in front of Shane Filan, one of the two lead singers of Westlife.

    20. Craig David – "7 Days"

    UMG / Via youtube.com

So, it was actually really hard to choose just one song from Craig David. He's a true gem and was a huge influence on Brit Pop/R&B. I think we all thought it was funny how he pronounces the word "Tuesday" in this song because of his British accent. Another song of his you may remember is "What's Your Flava?" used in all sorts of commercials.

    21. And lastly, S Club 7 – "Never Had a Dream Come True"

    View this video on YouTube

    Interscope Records / Via youtube.com

This song will always bring back memories of watching the S Club 7 series on Fox Family (which changed its name to ABC Family and is now Freeform — ew) after school. I don't care if they're not the best singers; S Club 7 is the shit. My favorite was Rachel.

Let me know what songs you think deserve to go on this list!
