The Ten Scariest American Horror Story Episodes

In preparation of the new season of "AHS" which will premiere Wednesday, October 8th at 10/9c on FX, I have put together an unofficial list of the scariest episodes in AHS history. Not for the faint of heart. Spoiler alert!

10. "Pilot" Season 1 Episode 1

The one that started it all. Not only are the asshole twins brutally murdered in the basement, but in the present day of this episode, we get our first scarring (no pun intended) glimpse of Larry, the burned man. We are also introduced to Leather Man and are witness to Tate's maniacal psychological torture of a drug-addicted bully. Give yourself a pat on the back for braving the rest of the show after all that.

9. "The Seven Wonders" Season 3 Episode 13

Visiting the witches' various hells were pretty bad, but poor Misty Day. Stuck forever in a science lab having to slaughter and reanimate frogs for all eternity. Her screams of anguish are enough to give you nightmares. Shudder.

8. "Madness Ends" Season 2 Episode 13

If you're like me and you have an irrational fear of being locked up without cause, Sister Jude's plight is one that really haunts you. In this chilling episode, we meet the real Bloody Face, witness the Monsignor's lonely suicide, and see how horrifying asylums truly are.

7. "Burn Witch Burn" Season 3 Episode 5

Dolls are creepy. Spalding was creepy. Put them together and you get one big creep-fest. While this episode sees the return of Delphine's undead daughters and a gruesome witch burning, the freakiest part is the scene involving a bonnet-clad butler tucking Madison's dolled-up corpse into his trunk.

6. "The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks" Season 3 Episode 10

The Coven's crazy neighbor lady suffocates her own son in his hospital bed, Marie Laveau is snatching baby's from maternity wards, but the most fearsome part of this episode is the first appearance of Papa Legba. Nightmare city.

5. "Protect the Coven" Season 3 Episode 11

Queenie toting around Delphine's severed head for most of the episode was disturbing, but that's not the scariest part. Fiona's vicious murder of the Delphi Trust was gruesome, sure. The eeriest part was when Cordelia decided to re-blind herself by stabbing her eyes out. I understand that "Coven Above Everything" was drilled into her, but yikes!

4. "Unholy Night" Season 2 Episode 8

If you're like me, you were thrilled when you heard that Ian McShane was guest starring....until you saw the episode. I have never been able to look at Mr. McShane (or any Santa for that matter) the same.

2. "Tricks and Treats" Season 2 Episode 2

Season 2 came out swinging with the terror. A Bloody Face chase, first glimpse of Dr. Arden's creepy zombie-things. All scary as hell. Still, possessions terrify me above most other things. The exorcism scene is still one I choose to fast forward through.

1. "Piggy Piggy" Season 1 Episode 6

Rolling in at number 1, "Piggy Piggy" was a whirlwind of fear. The terrifying subplot of the half-human, half-pig urban legend with a taste for murder would have been enough for any viewer. But no. Murphy and his crew took it further with Violet's suicide and the story of Tate's school shooting rampage. All-in-all an emotionally (and physically) draining episode.

And here is proof that "Freakshow" may hold some of the biggest scares to come....

Because clowns are by far the scariest thing ever. In existence.
