Borussia Dortmund- Westfalenstadion

Borussia Dortmund is pretty much a unanimous pick for having one of the best atmospheres in football. With a staggering average attendance of roughly 80,000 people, Dortmund sport the largest average crowd in European football. Dortmund, known for being a working class city, exhibit the same attitude on the pitch. The highlight of Borussia Dortmund’s atmosphere has to be the “Yellow Wall.” This stand holds roughly 25,000 of the most diehard fans each game. They are well known throughout Europe for their creative tifos and deafening singing. If you planned on taking a seat on matchday, this is not the place for you as the fans will stand for all 90 minutes, plus stoppage time.

With the large crowds has also come success, as Dortmund have won two Bundesliga titles and two German Supercups since 2008. They can attribute this atmosphere and success to the leadership of their beloved former coach Jurgen Klopp. Now under the coaching of Thomas Tuchel, Dortmund continue to have success in both the Bundesliga and Champions League. Because of this, i do not foresee the atmosphere at Westfalenstadion dying down anytime soon.

Liverpool- Anfield

Anfield is a football stadium located in Liverpool, England. The stadium has a seating capacity of 54,074, making it the sixth largest football stadium in all of England. Since 2016, Liverpool has been playing exceptionally well. Between upsetting numerous teams and remaining on top of the Premier League leaderboard the atmosphere of their home turf has been surreal. Their most recent game against the reigning champs of the premier league, Leicester City, provided the team with an experience they were not expecting. Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Adam Lallana of Liverpool all scored during this matchup. The Reds have earned seven points in their first three matchups which has placed them in the top five of their leaderboard. After winning their matchup against Leicester City, the players utilized social media in order to express their feelings. The headline of their post stated “The atmosphere exceeded all expectations” . Thus proving that the environment in Anfield, England is definitely an atmosphere worth going to see.

Barcelona- Camp Nou

Camp Nou is home to the team of Barcelona. This stadium is the 11th largest in the World. It first opened in 1957 with only two stands that seated only 60,000 fans. When Spain hosted the 1982 World Cup, Camp Nou was expanded to hold a capacity of 80,000 people. The stadium will be remodeled this year, but the work will not be completed until 2021. Many traditions take place at this stadium on game day with one tradition being a chant that is sung at every match. The reasoning behind the chant is to create noise and provide support for their team. Two inflatable men can be seen at every game. Their sole purpose is to create a happier environment for those in attendance. These inflatables are so large that they can even be seen on television by viewers. The most recognized tradition is the creation of forms of mosaic artwork. The mosaics, like the one pictured, stand for unity in Barcelona. Their meanings can be about independence or simply in support of the club, but their beauty remains undeniable. On game days, fans are encouraged to support the team by wearing purple and red. Camp Nou allows people to tour the stadium and the FC Barcelona museum. The museum is home to trophies, interactive displays, and highlights from previous players. With the expansion of Camp Nou, the crowds will grow bigger and the excitement at games will as well.

Seattle Sounders- Centurylink Field

People that say soccer in America doesn’t have the same atmosphere clearly has never seen a Seattle Sounders match. The Sounders have topped the MLS in attendance for years now, averaging about 43,000 fans per game in 2016. This attendance can regularly climb to into the 60,000’s when they are playing their rival, Portland Timbers, in a derby game known as the “Battle of Cascadia.” This derby is considered the crown jewel of all MLS rivalries with the Sounders supporters group, Emerald City Supporters, driving the chants and atmosphere. One of the major points that has helped the Sounders grow their fanbase is the presence of popular American players. Clint Dempsey has been arguably one of the best United States players of all time, and now with Jordan Morris on the team, the Sounders are also set for the future.

Winning the MLS cup in 2016 will help the Sounders keep this raucous atmosphere going. With the popularity of soccer in America increasing at a steady rate, the Seattle Sounders are one of the teams spearheading this growth with its amazing fan base.

Galatasaray- Turkey Türk Telekom Arena

Rising in the Seyrantepe quarter of the Şişli district, which is located on the European side of Istanbul, Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi - Türk Telekom Arena is the home ground of the Süper Lig club Galatasaray S.K. Türk Telekom Arena can comfortably seat well over 52,000 fans at any given time, 52,652 fans to be exact. The Türk Telekom Arena was the first stadium in Turkey that met the UEFA Euro 2016 requirements during the country’s bid to host the European Championship. The stadium took a total of four years to be completely constructed and cost a total of $250 million to build. In 2011 when the stadium first opened, Türk Telekom Arena was one of six nominees for the Venue of the Year and New Venue categories of the Stadium Business Awards. The Türk Telekom Arena saw its record high attendance during a game they play against Real Madrid in 2013 at 52,044 spectators. Because of the violence in this arena, ticket sales have actually decreased. The arena has had to implement an anti-violence law in order to keep fans from starting fights. Although the atmosphere has dropped since 2001, Turk Telekom Arena still comes in at number five for best soccer atmosphere.
