Worried about pests? Here are some tips you can use for avoiding pests in your building.

Pest control can be a huge problem. Whether you are worried about termites, ants, mice, or other types of pests, there are things that you can do to help you prevent having problems with pests in your home. Below are some tips you can use for preventing pests in your building.

Roof

Examine the roof of your home for any leaks and be certain that all of your downspouts and gutters are working well. You should also make sure that the pipes and splash blocks are diverting water a few feet away from the foundation of your home.

Trees and Bushes

Cut all of your trees back so that they're a minimum of three feet from your roof, and trim the bushes so that they're at least a foot from the walls of your house, your porch, your outbuildings, and your carport. Shape the bushes at their bottoms so that your building's foundation has air circulation.

Standing Water

Ensure that you have no type of standing water which is inside or next to your foundation or crawlspace. A lot of times, your crawlspace is below your house and it is the sump which allows the water to come in. Fix your outside drainage or put in a pump and French drain inside if it's necessary.

Foundation Vents

The foundation vents need to be secure as well as operating correctly so that there is ventilation. Is the ground damp naturally in the crawlspace? Place a vapor barrier made from plastic so that airborne moisture is reduced. Ensure that the door of the crawlspace and all of your other windows and doors are tight.

Foundation

Don't store or stack building materials, firewood, and other similar items against the foundation. This is going to provide food for the insects that destroy wood, capture the water, and give all kinds of pets a place to sleep. Seal off the utility and construction gaps you find in the foundation.

Garbage

Make sure that all of your garbage containers are secured and latched. Then store them a few feet from the building. Ensure that your garbage is removed from the building and the containers outside on a regular basis.
