6 Easy Ways To Be A Better Human Online
The Internet is awesome, but it also seems to bring out the worst in some people. Since 10 February is Safer Internet Day, here's a fool-proof guide from Voices of Youth to help you be a better person online.
1. Be a human, not a troll
You have the right to express your views and opinions on social networks, blogs and comments - but this is not an invitation to troll and spread hatred. Respect the views of others, even if you do not agree.
2. Be cautious
Avoid sharing personal information like your address or phone number (obviously) that could put your safety at risk. Check the privacy settings on your social media platforms to make sure they're what you want.
Did you know? If you're under 18 but you change your age on social media to seem older, you don't benefit from some of the automatic privacy settings that some sites set for younger users.
3. Check the facts
The web has information that can help you with school work, planning your career, looking after your health…but a lot of what is out there isn't true, accurate or sometimes legal. Check for reputable sources (before you share!) and don't believe the first thing you read.
Be careful which online sources you cite in your college/university essays! Try to find the original source and check out who the authors are and when the info was published. There may be more up-to-date stuff out there.
4. Be yourself
You have the right to privacy - and so do others. Respect it.
It is not okay to log into other people's accounts or to use their phones or profiles without their permission.
5. Put yourself in someone's (digital) shoes
"OMG did you see that hilarious picture of Sara from the party? Someone shared it on my feed this morning..."
Don't take part in the bullying of others by spreading rumors or posting and sharing hurtful or embarrassing stories or photos.
Things that may seem funny are often at the expense of someone else. And you wouldn't want to be that "someone else".
6. Think twice, or even thrice
You've heard this a one million times...once you share a photo or a video it is hard to control what happens to it and who sees it.
Think twice before you click ‘send’ - especially if you're upset or angry.
