A British Singer Says She'll Sing At Trump's Inauguration If She Can Cover Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"

Rebecca Ferguson said the song "speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States".

UK singer Rebecca Ferguson has revealed she has been asked to sing at President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony, which takes place on 20 January.

And the X Factor star said she will "graciously accept" if she can sing "Strange Fruit", a song made famous by jazz musician Billie Holiday. The song is about racism and lynching in America.

The singer, who uploaded her response to Twitter on Monday, said "Strange Fruit" was of "huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial".

Here is her response in full:

I've been asked and this is my answer. If you allow me to sing "strange fruit" a song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial. A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States. A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington. Best Rebecca X

Several musicians, including Celine Dion, Ice T, Adam Lambert, and David Foster, have already turned down performing at Trump’s inauguration ceremony.

A lot of people have tweeted admiration for Ferguson after she posted her response.

"Thank you for your morality", one user said.

BuzzFeed News reached out to Rebecca Ferguson's team but they did not provide any further comment.

And here are the lyrics to "Strange Fruit".

Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
And the sudden smell of burning flesh!

Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
