24 Horror Movies That Are Too Gory To Actually Be Scary

If you're into movies that are less "boo" and more "ew" then read on.

We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to tell us which horror movie is so gruesome that it's not actually that scary, and boy did they deliver!

🚨 FYI – there are spoilers ahead! 🚨

    1. The Final Destination movies (2000 - 2005)

A man looks scared as he lifts his arms to pull his weights down at the gym
    New Line Cinema

"I love these movies but it looks so much like special effects that it makes me laugh. I guess the deeper meaning is that people are meant to die at certain points but the gore was just too much."

"They try so hard to freak you out but it ends up looking tacky and unrealistic."

    2. Hostel (2005)

One man is tied up on a chair while another approaches him wearing a face mask and holding a strange hooked tool

"Yes the concept is scary, but the gore (THAT eyeball scene, to name but one!) makes you forget all of that. So grim."

"It was gross just to be gross and not really scary. I felt like the gore overtook what could have been a good scary movie."

    3. The Saw movies (2004 - 2017)

A woman has a metal brace on her head and looks away from the camera, traumatised and splattered with blood

"I spent a lot of the time looking away from the screen – but because I'm so squeamish, not because it was scary."

"When John Kramer was alive there was some sort of plot. It seems like after that the film's makers just wanted to make the goriest films possible without paying much attention to the plot or horror aspect."

    4. As Above, So Below (2014)

A woman and man are looking at an ancient-looking plaque somewhere underground, the woman reaches towards it
    Universal Pictures

"It had a great plot at first but really started to get laughable when the wall zombie thing jumped out and there were rivers of blood..."

    5. Cabin Fever (2002)

A man's face is covered in blood, he looks at something off camera in disgust
    Lionsgate Films

"If your worst fear when shaving is cutting yourself and ripping your skin, then Cabin Fever turns it into a reality. It’s about five friends in a cabin in the woods who become infected with a flesh-eating virus and fight to survive it – and the homicidal locals."

"It's honestly hard to tell if this movie is trying to be scary, campy, gross, or stupid – then you get to the leg shaving scene! Nope. Nope. Nope."

    6. Ready or Not (2019)

A woman wearing a wedding dress is spattered with blood, she holds her hand over her heart and looks sad
    Fox Searchlight Pictures

"It's labeled a “comedy horror”, but I honestly can’t tell if we’re supposed to be frightened or grossed out because it feels so campy. And it is gross. The nail through the hand, the exploding people, the state of the wedding gown by the end... 🤢"

    7. The Hellraiser movies (1987 - 2018)

A woman walks down the stairs menacingly, she has a perm and is wearing shoulder pads
    Entertainment Films Distribution

"The gory effects in the first film were great, but the movie itself wasn’t that scary so it was mostly just gross."

"I absolutely love the franchise for the terrible gore and the '80s fashion in the first few movies – who doesn't love a murderer with a perm and shoulder pads?!"

    8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

A man in a mask holds a chainsaw over his head while another man is lying on the floor underneath him
    New Line Cinema

"The original is basically bloodless and depends entirely on its atmosphere and is absolutely terrifying. The remake uses a ridiculous amount of blood and guts – watching it made me realize there is a huge difference between 'horror' and 'gore-er'."

    9. The Human Centipede (2009)

A man crouches on the floor in distress, holding his hands in front of him as if he's praying
    Bounty Films

"It is 99% disgust with just a tiny smattering of fear."

"While it's not really as gory as other movies like Saw or Hostel, the concept is just so disgusting that it's not even scary, just gross."

    10. Tusk (2014)

A man sits in a rocking chair looking terrified and crying

"It could barely watch it – not because it was scary, but because of how disturbingly gross it was. I would even say it was worse than The Human Centipede."

    11. Piranha 3D (2010)

A woman is underwater with at least three huge piranhas right in front of her face, she turns away from them in fear
    Dimension Films

"It was hilariously gory. Just an excuse for a bunch of bikini-wearing hotties to get wet and scream. 10/10 for gore, 0/10 for scare."

    12. Green Inferno (2013)

a woman and two men sit in a huge cage looking scared and cradling each other while people painted in red look in on them from outside the cage
    BH Tilt

"I basically watched the entire movie with my hand held over my iPad screen. It wasn’t scary – just disgusting."

    13. House of 1,000 Corpses (2003)

A woman and three men dressed in gothic clothing stand over a skeleton, screaming and laughing
    Lionsgate Films

"It had me looking away because of how disgusting it was. The gore definitely took away from how terrifying it truly could have been."

    14. Bird Box (2018)

A woman, a man, and two children sit in a dark house, the children have blindfolds on their foreheads

"Hear me out, it was an okay movie with an okay plot (a little too much like A Quiet Place) but still, I watched the whole way through. But what I wasn’t expecting was the gore – I felt the amount of times we saw people kill themselves was overkill. Literally. I think that if it had focused more on a detailed plot (instead of watching people get burned alive or chopped up) it would’ve been a good movie. But after watching it, I was ready to pull my own eyes out."

"The injury detail gives me nightmares more than the monster did. When the lady stabbed the scissors into her neck – 😣"

    15. Deep Blue Sea (1999)

A man holds his hand inside the open mouth of a huge shark
    Warner Bros. Pictures

"I laughed the entire time – and this is coming from an easily scared 13 yr old. There is so much blood it’s hilarious, and the premise of the movie itself is just ridiculous – 10/10."

    16. Girl on the Third Floor (2019)

A woman stands opposite a man in a large dark room, we can see that she's holding a hammer behind her back
    Dark Sky Films

"Super gore-fest but not at all scary, imo."

    17. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A teenage boy sleeps on his bed while a clawed hand rises up from inside the bed, reaching to grab him
    New Line Cinema

"Don't hate me – I love the movies, and there are scary aspects, but it has so much gore. Poor '80s Johnny Depp gets sucked in to his bed only for hundreds of gallons of blood to come pouring out."

    18. The Midnight Meat Train (2008)

A man stands in a lit-up train carriage holding a bloody meat hammer

"Recently added to Netflix – it stars Bradley Cooper among other big names. By the end, the gore, butchery, and murder just gets silly. A shame because the film's plot was promising."

    19. Raw (2016)

A girl looks into the distance with blood around her mouth
    Focus World

"It wasn't scary, just gross: the puking scene, the raw chicken scene, the fact that the whole movie is about a girl discovering she's a cannibal..."

    20. Terrifier (2016)

A creepy clown smiles while holding his hands up, in his hand is a small sharp tool
    Dread Central Presents

"It wasn’t scary (I think it was supposed to be somewhat comedic), just gross and perverted. I was done after *spoiler alert* he began to saw the woman in half vertically... It hurt my lady bits 😩"

"The gore was just ridiculous, especially the sawing scene... you know the one I'm talking about."

    21. Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Lots of zombies run in a group towards something or someone off camera
    Universal Pictures

"The remake had a pretty scary beginning, but once they got to the mall everything just became ridiculous. The zombie baby, the chainsaw accident in the armored car... Just gross."

    22. The Descent (2005)

A woman stands in a pool of blood looking traumatised
    Pathé distribution

"The first half is mysterious and scary, but it all goes downhill after we see the creatures. By the end she's swimming in pools of blood. It's way less scary than it is just gross."

    23. The Platform (2019)

A man looks down at a table full of food that another man is sitting at and eating hungrily

"I love a good horror movie, and although it has a creepy feel I was too focused the entire time on the gore and gross scenes. I had to turn it off after an hour or so – it grossed me out way too much but didn’t scare me a bit."

    24. Braindead – AKA Dead Alive (1992)

A man and woman are covered in blood and hold onto each other in fear while looking towards the camera
    Polygram Filmed Entertainment

"An early horror film directed by Peter Jackson. It’s just so beyond gory and gross, it crosses into campy instead of horror. I still love it, but it’s just not scary."
