The Carolina Panthers had a great day on Sunday against the particularly sub-par defense of San Francisco. Fan-favorite Luke Kuechly made a nice debut with the defense’s only interception. Certainly, a nice way to start the season for him, especially coming off of a rib injury that gave him trouble in the pre-season.
Cam Newton had a nice outing on Sunday completing 14 out of the 25 attempts adding up to a total of 171 receiving yards for the day. The Panther’s 2017 number 1 draft pick Christian McCaffrey had a total of 47 yards on 13 attempts. He was also the number two receiver for the squad this week racking in 5 out of 7 targets and a total of 38 yards receiving.
A big topic of discussion this week was the ability of the offensive line to protect Newton In the pocket. Last year Newton was sacked a total of 36 times which I thought played a big role in the team’s offense ranking 19th for offensive production, according to ESPN stats. http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/total/year/2016
ESPN Staff writer David Newton pointed out an interesting statistic that makes you wonder if this Panther’s team now has a huge aspect they were missing last season, protection for the quarterback. Here is what Newton had to say about the issue.
“For only the second time in the past 24 games and only the ninth time in his career, Newton, sacked an average of 36.8 times a season since entering the league in 2011, wasn’t sacked,” Said Newton. http://www.espn.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/68952/protecting-cam-newton-was-a-win-within-the-panthers-week-1-win
Have all of the pieces finally come together for this Panther’s team? It’s been a while since we’ve seen a healthy lineup, and if there was anything the 2015 season taught, it’s that a health Panther’s lineup has the capability to be very dominant.
Let’s see if the Panthers can continue their success against Buffalo this Sunday at 1:00 pm eastern, in the queen city.
