  • U-2 Spy Plane Lens Used On Homegrown Camera, and Other DIY Monstrosities

    DIY photography isn’t a new school art, but one Chris McCaw has been credited with pushing the boundaries of it more so than just about anyone else in the business. This bloke is responsible for using bits and pieces of gear in order to concoct monstrous cameras that are then used to photograph long exposures of the sun, eventually leading to beautifully artistic shots known best as sunburns. During a recent interview with photo-eye, Chris detailed one of his latest inventions: a wheelchair camera that looks suspiciously like Mike Wazowski. The camera is so huge that it requires a jack just to raise and lower the lens (goodbye, lens shake!) and a handicap ramp is necessary to load and unload it from a van. The unit itself relies on a lens that was purportedly taken from a Lockheed U-2 spy plane, and if you’re unfamiliar, that flavor of surveillance craft is largely credited with obliterating relations between America and the Soviet Union in 1960.   • Looxcie Wearable Camcorder Will Take Your Lifecasting to the Next Level (video)

    Don’t get us wrong, the Looxcie wearable video camera is pretty cool, and totally weird. It’s an always on camera that stores up to five hours of video, and is capable of quickly emailing short clips to your various social networks which are anxiously awaiting those shots of you eating your Southwestern eggrolls at Chili’s. Once your cam reaches its max storage capacity, it begins purging the oldest video and continues to record. Using Looxcie’s app (available for about 10 Android phones) enables you to quickly share your videos with the world. The Looxcie wearable video camera is available now for $199 — but please keep in mind: watching you watch Some Kind of Monster probably sounds better than it actually would be.

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab Keyboard, Desktop, and Car Docks Eyes-on

    The press release from earlier today provided all the textual details, but now we’ve gotten our own eyes on the Samsung Galaxy Tab accessory lineup — not to be touched at the event, but we could gaze all the same. Pictured above is the $99.99 keyboard dock that gives you a full physical QWERTY on top of a charger / sync dock, along with stereo audio output. Then comes the desktop dock (formerly referred to as the HDMI dock) that allows you to watch videos up to 1080p, view pictures, and listen to music via HDMI All the pictures are below, can ya dig?out. Last but not least is the car / GPS dock for $99.99, for GPS turn-by-turn navigation on the go.

  • Apple’s 27-inch Cinema Display is Now Shipping

    Your favorite fruit-flavored company couldn’t stand idly by and let Dell take all the IPS glory this week. Apple’s 27-inch Cinema Display, announced in late July, has at long last been set free to venture forth and mesmerize people with its glossy screen and 2560 x 1440 resolution. The entry fee is set at $999, though deliveries will take a pretty glacial one to two weeks to reach your porch.

  • Impressive HRP-4 Robot Will Make You Bow in Deference (video)

    Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is back with the mighty impressive HRP-4 humanoid. Created in partnership with Kawada Industries, this 151-centimeter (5-feet) tall, 39-kilo (86-pound) walking followup to the HRP-4C, HRP-3 and HRP-2 robots (pictured in the background) was developed to help take over manufacturing duties from a rapidly aging Japanese work force. The highly mobile HRP-4 features 34-degrees of movement with AIST proprietary control software running on a Linux core. Things get weird at the 5:30 mark of the video embedded after the break when a human enters the stage for a good ol’ fashioned stare down. Probably has something to do with his hot wife.

  • Greensound’s Glass Speakers: Stunning Visually and Aurally, Far from Kid-friendly

    Yeah, we’ve seen our fair share of glass speakers in the past, but it looks as if Greensound has hopped on the bandwagon at just the right time. In the past, these kinds of music makers were largely looked at as gimmicks, but the Floe series looks to offer a serious advantage over equally expensive conventional drivers. Put simply, audio is created at the base of each speaker, and it’s distributed up (and around) the pane with the lows coming from the bottom, the mids from the middle and the highs from the top. We’re pretending to ignore the fact that these things will probably be far outside the budget of every sect save for the affluent, but you can tease yourself by pressing play just after the break.

  • IOS 4.1 Now Available to Download, a Great Leap for All “iKind”

    If you can just plug your iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 2nd generation, iPod touch 3rd generation, or iPod touch 4th generation into iTunes, you should be in for a pleasant non-surprise: iOS 4.1 is finally out and ready for your consumption. It's not a huge update, but Game Center is an exciting addition (for the few, proud devices that are getting it), and we're sure your face will be happy to stop getting accused for iPhone 4 hang-ups with the long overdue proximity sensor fix. We sure hope that the new update will bring peace and prosperity for all iPhone kind.

  • Windows Phone 7 Ad Promises ‘the Revolution is Coming’ (video)

    Usually we’d advise you not to read too much into this — we’d point out that this was a themed ad served up before the showing of Lawrence of Arabia at London’s Secret Cinema event — but what the hell: Microsoft says the revolution’s coming. It’s on now!

  • IPhone 4 + Canon SLR = ICanon 4 !!!

    While it's far from the most practical of ideas, people just can't seem to stop trying to make their iPhones more SLR-like. Joining that illustrious group is one Aniebres who, typos aside, has built one of the most impressive contraptions to date. We're still waiting to see what the end results look like, but the hardware side of things looks to be surprisingly solid, with the iPhone 4 slotting in with a satisfying click, while the entire lens mechanism has been shifted over to line up with the iPhone's camera (and make room for an Apple sticker)

  • IOS 4.0 Vs. IOS 4.1 – IPhone 3g Test (video)

    iOS 4.0 was so slow on our 3G, we promptly downgraded after updating. Earlier this week, Apple announced, among other things, that iOS 4.1 fixed performance on the iPhone 3G. We put their claim to the test. In the video above, the iPhone 3G battles itself in an epic speed test to find out if Apple’s claims are true: Is iOS 4.1 faster than 4.0, or is it just a wash?
