She died on her 23rd birthday, when her parents took her off life support. Her actions have been praised as a display of civil courage.

Associated Press reported that police have taken a suspect into custody:

An 18-year-old identified only as Sanel M. is in custody over the attack, said Offenbach police spokesman Ingbert Zacharias. He said the Serbian teenager has "been the focus of several police investigations in the past, also in connection with an assault causing bodily harm."

The AP added:

A German prosecutor says preliminary autopsy results failed to clearly identify the cause of death of a young woman who died after reportedly defending two teenage girls from male harassment.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Albayrak's family said they were aware of the video as a piece of evidence in the investigation but urged people not to share it:

"Legally we can not do anything about it because the video has been processed, but our voice is stronger than many think," the statement read, adding that Albayrak's death "should help to prevent such horrible acts in the future. We don´t want more mothers, fathers and families to suffer."

"The facts are clear. This video does not help to clear facts that are already known. Please keep the family in mind!"
