Fact Or Fake: How Easily Are You Fooled?

How many facts can you spot among the fakes? Put your discernment to the test #TalkCriticalThinking

    1. You only use 10% of your brain

      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Myth busted!

Brain scans, medical histories and simple logic show this is nonsense: our brains are complex and mysterious, but this doesn't mean they are largely unused.

    2. There are more molecules in a glass of water than stars in the galaxy

      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Amazing but true!

There are about 600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules in one cubic inch of water: trillions of times more than the stars in our galaxy, which at most number around 400,000,000,000.

    3. Earth is closer to the sun in summer than winter

      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Myth Busted!

The seasons are caused by the fact that the Earth its tilted on its axis: when it's winter in one hemisphere, it's summer in the other, and vice versa.

    4. Apples aren't mentioned in the book of Genesis

      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Truly true!

Although the fruit in the garden of Eden is often depicted as an apple, the Bible itself only calls it a "fruit" without specifying which type.

    5. Nobody knows exactly why paracetamol works

Flickr: jepoirrier text added to image
      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Truth!

Paracetamol is one of a number of common drugs whose mechanisms of action are not fully understood

    6. Russia is larger than the surface area of Pluto

Flickr: atbaker text added to image
      Correct!
      Wrong!

      No longer true!

We used to think this was true - but when the New Horizons mission flew close to Pluto in 2015, a more accurate measurement showed the planet was larger than previously thought, putting it ahead of Russia!

    7. Eating before swimming causes stomach cramps

Flickr: 68711844@N07 text added to image
      Correct!
      Wrong!

      No evidence!

Although this claim is commonly made, there is no evidence to support it - although you should avoid alcohol before going for a swim.

    8. There are more bacterial cells in your body than human

Flickr: 144218922@N07 text added to image
      Correct!
      Wrong!

      Only too true!

In terms of sheer numbers, there are many more bacterial cells in your body than your own, human cells: ten times as many
