14 Things That Happen When You're An Australian-Born Asian Going Through School

A unique experience, and probably your first time experiencing life outside an Asian household. Never a dull moment.

1. Parent teacher interviews were always interesting

especially when you had to translate for your parents

2. But it was always terrifying if you were sitting on a B for maths, science, english

Though failing gym wasn't as bad

4. Your name was probably mispronounced on more than one occasion

or there was always a slight pause before your name during roll call, especially when it was a relief teacher.

5. You always had awesome things to bring to show-and-tell

6. Career days could be awkward

You can be anything you like within set boundaries (doctor, lawyer, engineer), but DEFINITELY not an artist, journalist, musician.

7. University was the only way to go after high school, and your parents would probably balk at the thought of a 'gap year'

8. Your parents probably paid for you to go to Saturday school or undergo extra tutoring to get ahead of your class

9. Piano lessons were most likely mandatory

and you practised so much your hands were super dexterous

10. You had to walk your parents through complicated forms and permission slips

and maybe forge it because it was easier

11. Your english is stellar, though your native tongue is basically a train to #struggletown

especially when your language teacher/Grandma/elders fail to understand you

12. Your Asian parents would swap stories with other Asian parents about you and your friends

and you'd only be able to go to a party/retreat/excursion if your other Asian friend was going.

13. Dating was a huge no during high school

14. But you could always count on your parents' to cheer you on, come hell or high water
