1. Earlier this week, McDonald's Japan announced it will be releasing a purple sweet potato McShake.

No word yet on how the beverage will taste, though purple sweet potatoes are often used in desserts across Asia.

Let's look at some of the other offbeat items that have graced Japanese menus over the years.

2. A high class $10 quarter pounder

This one, known as the Quarter Pounder Gold Ring is one in a line of 'luxury, high class quarter pounders' and is served with bacon, a beef pattie, cheese, pineapple and a dollop of bbq sauce. You can read an extensive review here.

Other burgers in the 'Quarter Pounder Jewelry Burgers' series include the 'Black Diamond' and 'Ruby Spark'.

3. Tofu Shinjo McNuggets

In the wake of a meat contamination scandal in Asia, the company released nuggets made from fish, tofu and vegetables including soy beans, endamame and carrots according to CNN.

8. A Sakura Fizz Float and Sakura Teritama burger

Both products were created for hanami, the cherry blossom viewing season. The Teritama burger has a fried egg, a ginger teriyaki pork patty, lettuce, and is completed with a sakura daikon radish mayonnaise sauce.

or as they're called, "happy sets" in Japan, which come with the traditional cheeseburger, fries and soft drink - but you can swap fries out for a bowl of corn and the soft drink for grape juice.
