AAPI buying power has increased by 257% since 2000, the fastest of all racial groups. In 2017, their buying power hit $986 billion, about 6.8% of the US total. That number is expected to grow to $1.3 trillion by 2022. The question is whether the economics and representation of AAPI people in both advertising and the media is proportional.

Yeun was one of two actors of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Actor this year, along with Riz Ahmed for _Sound of Metal_. Nearly 3,800 hate incidents have been self-reported by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across all 50 states and the District of Columbia since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new data from Stop AAPI Hate. Stop AAPI Hate is a national coalition that tracks anti–Asian American discrimination. Of that number, 503 incidents took place in the first two months of 2021 alone. Verbal harassment (68.1%) and shunning (20.5%), which entails the “deliberate avoidance of Asian Americans,” are the top two types of discrimination reported. Physical assault (11.1%) comprises the third-largest category of total incidents. Civil rights violations — which include workplace discrimination, refusal of service, and debarment from transportation — comprise 8.5% of total incidents and online harassment makes up 6.8%. Businesses were the “primary site” of discrimination (35.4%), followed by public streets (25.3%) and public parks (9.8%).

Despite some improvement in the frequency and scope of representation, the presence of Asian Americans is still oftentimes limited to narrowly defined stereotypical roles, typically presented as the technological experts: knowledgeable, savvy, perhaps mathematically adept or intellectually gifted.

Generally, brands and communications agencies are accurately representing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in their marketing materials.

Morning Consult reports that 3 in 5 Asian Americans, when asked, said they “rarely” or “never” see people who look like them in advertising materials such as TV commercials or sponsored content posts on social media, despite commanding nearly $1 trillion of buying power in the US. Thirty-six percent of Asian Americans are likely to buy products based on the advertisement’s effort to feature Asians or other people of color.
