What is mindful eating?

Mindful eating is basically eating with both intention and attention — paying attention to your food and focusing on your meal or snack as the thing you're doing right now. Developing your mindful eating skills can give you a better relationship with food, lower your stress levels, and leave you feeling great!

Here are some tried-and-true ways to start becoming a more mindful eater.

1. Focus on your food.

Busy lives mean eating quickly, but when you take a moment to slow down and really focus on what you're eating, and that you're eating, your hectic day will fall away a bit and give you space to breathe.

2. Engage all of your senses.

Think about the smell, texture, and taste of your food. The more carefully you engage all five of your senses, the more satisfying your snack will be!

3. Portion your food.

Getting used to eating the right portions can be tough! And different people with different lifestyles might find different portions of food satisfying. Start smaller, and remember, if you're still hungry when you're done eating, you can always serve yourself more. This way you don't accidentally eat to the point of feeling too full.

7. Listen to your body.

With busy schedules and having to plan meals around other things, it's easy to fall out of the habit of listening to your body. Are you hungry? Have something to eat! Are you not hungry? Wait a little while longer. It can be tough to get used to, but it's worth it!

Seriously! An extra half hour in bed feels great, but not having breakfast will leave you sluggish until noon. Skipping meals can make you more stressed and less energetic. Try to make time to eat every meal, or at least time to eat a great snack that will tide you over until you have time to eat your next meal.

9. Make food you really love.

Snacks and meals both. Food isn't a punishment! Food is delicious and nourishes you.
