Music And Music Videos About The "Crazies"

Mental Illness is often inaccurately depicted in songs... #EndTheStigma #MHrevolution

1. "Lose My Mind" by Brett Eldredge

What's sexier? A hypersexualized nurse or the straight jacket/padded cell? HM, I CAN'T TELL. The lyrics are just terrible. Smh.

2. "Whiskey Lullaby" by Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss

Now, I LOVE THIS SONG... but it is romanticizing a double suicide, so that's quite problematic in itself... I would love for songs to do suicide prevention rather than the opposite of making it seem so damn romantic.

3. "Why" by Rascal Flatts

This song actually discusses a suicide and it's impact on the community without making it seem at all appealing. It's heartbreaking and honest.

4. "Breathe Me" by Sia

Probably my favorite song on what it feels like to be depressed and to deal with self-harm or even suicidal ideation. It's intense and emotional and beautiful.

5. "Bloodstream" by Ed Sheeran

Quite a few of Sheeran's songs hint at substance abuse, from weed to alcoholism. It isn't like songs that proudly encourage binge drinking... just shows the sad side of using alcohol as an unhealthy coping mechanism for depression or anxiety.

6. "Unwell" by Matchbox Twenty

This song doesn't portray a specific mental illness per say but more so the struggle to appear 'normal' to friends, family and co-workers despite silently struggling with mental illness on a daily basis.

7. "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse

This almost turns 'rehab' into a joke. Therapy and professional help should be taken seriously.

8. "The Monster" by Eminem & Rihanna

Eminem often has a refreshingly honest approach to him being "crazy" such as his issues with addiction. This video even looks like it is supposed to take place in a psych ward of some sort. It is a personification of his mental illnesses, by calling it a 'monster' in his head.

9. "The Way She Feels" by Between The Trees

I remember this song from years back, but I never listened to the lyrics... they are obviously clearly about self-harm with possible depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder or some other mental illness.

10. "Fix You" by Coldplay

Classic song about not being good enough, about being so hard on yourself to the point that it causes anxious and/or depressive thinking patterns and behaviors. Love me some Coldplay.

11. "Invisible" by Hunter Hayes

Bullying is so common, starting at such a young age. This song is about the singer's personal experience with being bullied and how to rise above it and keep strong.

12. "Warrior" by Demi Lovato

I love Demi for her music, but more importantly for her bipolar disorder advocacy! She has talked openly about her depression, mania and struggles with mental health in general.

13. "Til it Happens to You" by Lady Gaga

This music video is a brutally vivid, graphic one of rape culture, rape and the trauma that follows the event(s). There is so much blame put on the victim of the crime, and often they are not believed if they speak up about the incident. It's a damn shame.

14. "Pretty Hurts" by Beyonce

This is about excessive pushes for perfectionism in the body, leading to unhealthy self esteem and body image issues, even leading possibly to eating disorders, depression and anxiety disorders (i.e. OCPD, GAD).

15. "Basket Case" by Green Day

This song is about panic disorder, which is a mental illness that is not discussed frequently enough. Many people secretly deal with anxiety and panic attacks. Let's open the discussion.
