Lil Nas X is the latest cover star of Time magazine.
In the interview, the "Old Town Road" rapper spoke to the publication about his reluctance to open up about his sexuality this year.
The Atlanta native said he grew up hearing that homosexuality was "never going to be OK" and that the hip hop community was "not accepting" of the LQBTQ community.
However, he overcame his fear when "the universe" pushed him to come out during Pride Month. “In June, I’m seeing Pride flags everywhere and seeing couples holding hands–little stuff like that," he said, on what inspired him to share his truth, unapologetically.
The 20-year-old reportedly came out to his father and his sister earlier in June before revealing the news to his fans just weeks later.
Now, he says he hopes his story will "open doors" for other young queer people to "feel more comfortable" to do the same.
YES, Lil Nas X! Cowboy hats off to you for being the queer icon 2019 needed. Keep shining. 🌈
