Jonathan Van Ness Revealed He's HIV-Positive, And I'm So Proud Of Him

"I do feel the need to talk about this."

You know Jonathan Van Ness as the resident grooming expert on Netflix's hit show Queer Eye.

Now, the 32-year-old hairdresser is giving fans more insight into his personal life with the release of his memoir, Over the Top.

During a recent interview with the New York Times, Jonathan revealed he's HIV-positive. He told the outlet that he tested positive at the age of 25, after fainting from flu-like symptoms while doing a client's hair.

"That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be," he recalled in his book.

Elsewhere in the memoir, Jonathan opened up about being a survivor of sexual abuse at a young age, which "planted the seed for other self-destructive behaviors."

In his college years, the TV personality reportedly "advertised sex for money" to sustain his drug habit, and went to rehab twice before turning his life around.

Jonathan told the newspaper he now considers himself "a healthy and proud member of the beautiful HIV-positive community."

"I do feel the need to talk about this," he said while explaining his "difficult" decision to disclose his health status. "I want people to realize you’re never too broken to be fixed," he shared.

I couldn't be more proud! 👏🏾 The internet reacted with an outpouring of love for Jonathan, too ❤️.

Jonathan's Queer Eye costar, Antoni, also reacted with kind words:
