15 Bollywood Movies To Look Forward To In 2014

The third quarter of 2014 has started brightly for the Hindi film industry, with ‘Singham Returns’ and ‘Mardaani’ going great guns at the box-office. Let’s do a round-up of the other eagerly anticipated films of the year.

    1.

If there's one thing that's truly impossible, it would be trying to foretell which Bolly movies will click with the audience at the box-office. The culture of star-gazing has made sure that recent insipid offerings like 'Kick' and 'Chennai Express' waltz their way into the Rs. 200cr domestic collections club, while real good stuff like 'Shahid' and 'Filmistaan' have come and gone unnoticed. The third and fourth quarters of 2014 has several interesting films lined up for release, among which the following have the best chances of succeeding at the BO:

    1. Happy New Year - Farah Khan messed things up with her last release, 'Tees Maar Khan' (2010), but this time she simply cannot go wrong. Judging by the response to the teaser trailer of 'Happy New Year', this annual SRK-starrer seems destined for box-office glory already. Teaming up with King Khan is his 'Chennai Express' leading lady Deepika Padukone, the baddie from the 'Don'-franchise Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, and Bollywood's forever-almost-there man Abhishek Bachchan. The team is making a smart use of mobile apps and social media channels (in addition to YouTube) to promote the flick. It remains to be seen how 'good' 'Happy New Year' actually turns out to be - but expect weekend records to tumble this Diwali.

    In theaters: 24 October

What's most noteworthy: Vivaan Shah, the son of Naseeruddin Shah, returns after his promising debut in 'Saat Khoon Maaf' (2011).

    2. PK - 'Ghajini', 'Three Idiots', 'Taare Zameen Par', 'Dhoom 3' - December has always been a good month for Aamir Khan. This year, he is collaborating with Rajkumar 'Munnabhai' Hirani for 'PK'. The movie has been in the news from the release of its very first poster - in which Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist stands in the buff on a rail-track, with a transistor to cover his modesty. Opinions have been divided as to whether this was a mere publicity stunt, or whether there is indeed such a sequence in the film. Whatever might be the case, people will be clamoring for tickets - and cash-registers will be set jingling.

    In theaters: 19 December

What's Most Noteworthy: The fresh Amir-Anushka Sharma pairing. The return of Sanjay Dutt after the unwatchable 'Policegiri'.

    3. Creature 3D - To revive her flagging film career, Bipasha Basu turns to her favorite genre this September - horror. She has leaned on the right director too, since Vikram Bhatt is a proven master of 'desi' ghost stories (remember 'Raaz', 'Haunted', and '1920'?). Bhatt will be looking to put back the twin disappointments of '1920-Evil Returns' and 'Horror Story' with 'Creature 3D' - which is being billed as the first monster movie of Bollywood. Will it be another copy-paste job from a Hollywood flick? We'll have to wait and watch!

    In theaters: 12 September

What's Most Noteworthy: The suspense about what would be the 'creature' in the film. The Bolly debut of the dishy Imran Abbas.

    4. Kill Dil - Ranveer Singh will be seeking to continue his golden run with 'Kill Dil' - in which he pairs up with the sprightly Parineeti Chopra and the charming Ali Zafar for the first time. The movie is particularly important for Zafar, who was last seen in the unanimously rejected 'Total Siyappa'. The tale of two buddies (professional killers, both!) being torn apart by the affections of a girl is not particularly novel - and it will be interesting to see what fresh twist director Shaad Ali can add to the tale. After his blink-and-you-miss act in 'Holiday', Govinda returns to the big screen with 'Kill Dil'.

    In theaters: 14 November

What's Most Noteworthy: Parineeti Chopra as the femme fatale. The effort of Shaad Ali after the debacle of 'Jhoom Barabar Jhoom' (2007).

    5. Bang Bang - Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif have set screens ablaze with their sizzling chemistry in 'Bang Bang'. Director Siddharth Raj Anand has changed tracks from rom-coms ('Salaam Namaste', 'Bachna Ae Haseeno') to full-blown action in this film. Interestingly, 'Bang Bang' is the official remake of Tom Cruise-starrer 'Knight And Day', which tanked at the Hollywood box-office. Jimmy Shergill and Danny Denzongpa have pivotal roles in the film, which is certain to open big.

    In theaters: 2 October

What's Most Noteworthy: Till now, hot-bod Hrithik Roshan have grabbed most eyeballs. Katrina Kaif would be desperate to shake off her 'looks good can't act' tag.

    6. 3 A.M. - No Khans, Kumars or Kapoors in this one - but let's give this '3 A. M.' a chance, simply because genuinely scary horror films are a rarity in B-Town. 'MTV Roadies'-man Rannvijay Singh makes his big-screen debut in this horrorfest, with Anindita Nayar (whose 'Amit Sahni Ki List' was hardly watched by anyone) for company. Vishal Mahadkar's first directorial venture, 'Blood Money', was a box-office turkey - and he has a chance to redeem himself with '3 A.M.' This will be a content-driven film, and those who love to get spooked will be queuing up for it.

    In theaters: 26 September

What's Most Noteworthy: The intriguing title. The graduation of Rannvijay Singh from the small to the big screen. Above all, the genre.

    7. Raja Natwarlal - Will he or won't he? We are talking about Emraan Hashmi, who has reportedly given up his 'serial-kisser' tag to cousin Alia Bhatt. In 'Raja Natwarlal', which hits theaters in four days, all eyes will be in on whether he steals a smooch or two with Pak-beauty Humaima Malik. The ever reliable Paresh Rawal is present in the star cast, along with the forever-classy Kay Kay Menon. 'Raja Natwarlal' is directed by Kunal Deshmukh - the director of 'Jannat' and 'Jannat 2'. Will he be able to pick Emraan out of his current lean patch?

    In theaters: 29 August

What's Most Noteworthy: Can Humaima do what another Pak-star, Meera, could not? Kunal Deshmukh has the reputation of bringing out the best from Emraan Hashmi (think 'Tum Mile' as well).

    8. Daawat-E-Ishq - The resident alcoholic of Bollywood, Aditya Roy Kapur, gets sober and lively as 'Lucknowala Aashiq Tariq', in this Habib Faisal flick. The subject of affection of the man who can whip up lip-smacking biryani-s and charm anyone with his words? 'Hyderabad Ki Tez' Gulrez - played by Parineeti Chopra. The first couple of songs from 'Daawat-E-Ishq' are already chartbusters, and it's very likely that this Yash Raj Films offering will be gobbled down by audiences...with relish!

    In theaters: 19 September

What's Most Noteworthy: The smart and colorful trailers. The unique premise of romance between a cook and a shoemaker girl. Sajid-Wajid's music.

    9. Mary Kom - Priyanka Chopra won't get a better chance to revive her career (after pieces of trash like 'Zanjeer', 'Deewana Main Deewana' and 'Teri Merii Kahani') than this biopic film. Piggy Chops plays the role of the medal-winning boxer, and the first-look poster - revealing a beefed up Priyanka - was an instant hit. Even the real Mary Kom has been tweeting good things about the film. A lot of hard work has gone into the making of this film, and it should wow both the classes and the masses.

    In theaters: 5 September

What's Most Noteworthy: 'Mary Kom' was initially slated to clash with 'Daawat-E-Ishq', before the release of the latter was pushed back. First-time director Omung Kumar's handling of the topic.

    10. Haider - Think of Shahid Kapoor, and the first image you get is that of him cavorting as a cute loverboy (the occasional 'Kaminey' aside), right?. Get ready to be surprised - for a shaved-head Shahid will be showcasing his acting prowess in 'Haider'. Going by the track record of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, this won't be one of those 200crore-films, but critical acclaim should be forthcoming. Sharddha Kapoor also gets a chance to move away from her bubbly romantic girl image.

    In theaters: 2 October

What's Most Noteworthy: The interesting get-up of Shahid Kapoor. Presence of powerhouse performers Irrfan Khan and Tabu.

    11. Rang Rasiya - Filming for Ketan Mehta's 'Rang Rasiya' finished in 2008, and that's when the troubles started. The film, which is based on the life and works of celebrated painter Raja Ravi Verma, ran into troubled waters with the Indian Censor Board. Fortunately for the film and its principal stars (Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen), the film remained in news - thanks to images and little tidbits about it being shared on movie websites and film-based mobile applications. Finally, all issues have been sorted out, and people will be able to see Ketan Mehta's magnum opus this year.

    In theaters: October 23

What's Most Noteworthy: Randeep Hooda seems the perfect fit for the intense lead role. The steamy sequences (which are what kept 'Rang Rasiya' in the news for so long!).

    12. Ungli - Any movie made under the banner of Karan Johar's Dharma Productions always generates quite a bit of buzz, and the intriguingly titled 'Ungli' is no exception. It has the unlikely duo of Emraan Hashmi and Sanjay Dutt in the lead roles, along with Kangna 'Queen' Ranaut as the heroine. After the commercial failure of 2009's 'Kurbaan', director Rensil D' Silva is in the need of a solid hit, which 'Ungli' can very well turn out to be.

    In theaters: November 21

What's Most Noteworthy: Shirish Kunder - the man who can seemingly do nothing right in Bollywood - is the editor of 'Ungli'. Kangna Ranaut's role is likely to be, as usual, something a li'l 'different'.

    13. Finding Fanny - Arjun Kapoor might very well make it a hat-trick of hits in 2014 with 'Finding Fanny', after the successes of 'Gunday' and '2 States'. It has taken Homi Adajania over eight years to make her second film, after the critically acclaimed 'Being Cyrus' - so we can very well expect this one to be one to savor. 'Finding Fanny' also boasts of hit-machine Deepika Padukone and the evergreen Naseeruddin Shah in its star-cast. The trailers have been quirky enough - and plenty of people are looking forward to the film.

    In theaters: September 12

What's Most Noteworthy: Anjali Patil, and not Deepika, plays the title character of 'Fanny Fernandez'. Ranveer Singh has a cameo in the movie.

    14. Khoobsurat - Sonam Kapoor has just the one genuine hit in her kitty - 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' - and not even her staunchest fan would give her much credit for its success. Earlier this year, the flop-show of 'Bewakoofiyan' had naysayers buzzing that Bollywood's resident fashionista does not have any acting skills to speak off. Khoobsurat (co-produced by her dad's company and Walt Disney Pictures) gives Sonam the perfect opportunity to silence her critics. Fawad Khan, who was last seen in 'Khuda Kay Liye' (2008) plays the male lead in 'Khoobsurat'. The movie is unlikely to open big - and would depend on its content to win over viewers.

    In theaters: September 19

What's most noteworthy: Shashank Ghosh, the director of 'Khoobsurat', had helmed 'Waisa Bhi Hota Hai: Part 2', over a decade back. It is the official remake of the 1980 film (of the same name), and Sonam Kapoor will be trying to step into the shoes of Rekha. Big challenge indeed!

    15. Action Jackson - Riding high on the roaring success of 'Singham Returns', Ajay Devgn will be returning on the silver screen in December - in Prabhu Dheva's 'Action Jackson'. Devgn will have Yami Gautam and Sonakshi Sinha for company in the film. Kunaal Roy Kapur will be seen after a fairly long hiatus on the big screen. 'Action Jackson' promises plenty of visual splendor and cool stunts.

    In theaters: November 7

What's Most Noteworthy: Himesh Reshammiya has made the music of 'Action Jackson', after his foot-tapping numbers in 'Kick'. Ajay Devgn and Sonakshi Sinha should make an interesting pair.

Horror-fans have further reasons to rejoice this reason, with 'Trip To Bhangarh' scheduled to release next week. Before the year is out, Akshay Kumar will have his third release of 2014 - 'The Shaukeens'. On November 28, 'Happy Ending', starring Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D'Cruz is slated to hit the theaters.

Which one of these films are you looking forward to the most?
