These Packing Cubes Are My Lifesaver When Traveling

It’s basically a magic trick in your suitcase.

I travel a lot. In fact, as a travel writer, I spend most of my life living out of a suitcase.

And while that can get super old, really fast, I’ve come up with a system to help make my days on the road a little less stressful. At this point, I pretty much consider myself to be a professional packer.

    Enter: the packing cube.

I’m not someone who can get by wearing the same thing over and over again when I’m traveling. So I actually wind up packing a lot of clothes (because, let’s be real, no one wants to be seen wearing the same thing in every 'gram), as well as a few unnecessary items ~just in case~ (like that hat I haven’t worn in three years), so I need the space for it all. I also want my luggage to be organized, so I know where everything is at all times and I'm not searching for that one thing I desperately need when I’m in a rush to get out the door.

Packing cubes, available in myriad shapes and sizes, regularly allow me to fulfill these dreams without having to lug along an extra suitcase.

Some can be compressed, and others somehow have the qualities of Mary Poppins’ carpet bag and seem to go on forever and ever.

There are two different kinds that I've been using for years now, and they are my magical little secret when it comes to fitting a ton of stuff into a modestly sized piece of luggage.

The first one I swear by is the Flight001 Spacepak.

I have two of these guys, and depending on what I’m packing, I use them to jam all my clothes in. It seems like this one can always fit just one more item, no matter how much I’ve already stuffed in there. I can generally fit up to two weeks of outfits in one of them, which makes these my go-to when I’m on the road for a long time. (It's available in solid blue as well as in a dots pattern and a striped pattern.)

As a bonus, they also have two zipper pockets, for clean clothes and dirty laundry (and they’re labeled!). Not only does this make me feel super organized, it also means I never deal with that frustrating moment on the last day of a trip where I can’t get my suitcase to zip shut because it’s overflowing with nasty, sweaty clothes.

The other packing cubes I use on the regular are the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Compression Cube Sets.

I have two sets of these as well, which each come with one regular-sized pack and one smaller pack for socks and undies, available in five colors: white, black, blue, green, and orange. (They’re also sold as a set of three that comes with a tube-shaped pack.)

I mostly use the big ones, and I can fit about five pairs of shorts and five T-shirts in one of them. If I’m using them for socks/undies/bathing suits/bras, I can fit enough for up to three weeks’ worth. Zip ‘em shut, compress, and be amazed at how flat that pack can get!

I know saying that packing cubes will change your life is a pretty bold statement — but stand by it! I can honestly say they’ve changed mine.
