Which Social Media Is Your Medium?

You got: Facebook Friendie

Hello there Friend :) Being a Facebook fan brings a whole new meaning to the word "like". And "friend". You know it's not going away, and Facebook is here to stay, but every year it changes in ways that dedicated users grump about. You are most interested in playing around and connecting with people online that you know in real life, and using the web as a place to socialize. Facebook may be an evil empire, but it’s the best place to see those funny faces Granny’s cat Peaches is making when she tries to feed him dried food. And did we mention the many engaging Facebook games, and the ability to instantly chat with any friends who are online? On Facebook, it’s all so friendly and personal, but everything you post gets fed into the belly of giant grumpy cat who uses it to sell more advertising. Most social media experts we've asked say the goal of Facebook is to entice people to leave Facebook.

Hello there you dedicated, fascinating, entertaining, and funny funny person you! Clearly you love to entertain, teach or share your ideas in a more immersive way. You want to tell big stories, share cat videos, or conspiracy theories, or demonstrate skills, your amazing voice or your rock band. Remember that YouTube comments are where good people go to die and don't take it personally. If you're more of a free-range artsy type, you might be interested in Vimeo, which is where many of the professional filmmakers go to play. Vimeo charges to post videos over a certain limit though, so if you want a free option where many people are going to wander though, YouTube is the theme park for you. Just don't search for "Obama is the antichrist" or you will be sorry.

Well, how about that! A genuine writer. We weren't expecting too many of you to appear, but here you are. Welcome to the jungle hombre. Medium is a newer platform, but unlike Tumblr which is dedicated to micro-blogging and posting multi-media, Medium lives to let you write as much as you want, and as often as you want. You can even publish a book on Medium, make it private and charge money for access. We know a guy who knows a guy who did this and was a success. If you want to write about the meaning of life and death, political diatribes, thoughtful stories about social media, psychology or any of a million other topics, you will enjoy medium. So what are you doing here still?? Get over to Medium and start typing!

You have all kinds of amazing stories, and how you love to wander! Here, there and everywhere you go…. looking for great content and sharing it with others. As long as you don’t have to write more than 250 words you are one happy camper. Plus Tumblr has added the ability to post things with an animated gif in your comments. Suddenly you can cut at least 1000 words from each post. Although if a picture is worth 1000 words does that mean an animated gif is worth 10,000? Sometimes you branch out and write a novel, but usually it’s all about bite-size content. There’s a reason you call it microblogging. And if you write cartoons, or play with other forms of multi-media, Tumblr makes it a snap to share, and lets others re-use your content without stealing your thunder. While you carry on wandering, taking a little bite here, a little bite there, and a little bite from everywhere while you share your adventures with the world.

Here you are, scrubbing away anything that isn’t business. Why get personal? Let’s just get down to business. If you want to prove your expertise, this is a great place to run a group, and connect with others who have similar backgrounds and careers. You might also enjoy Quora, which is a network dedicated to answering questions, and where experts from all over the world share their knowledge. Here’s a place where you can strut your stuff. Do you make soap? Pass the soap, it’s organic, free range and smells like heaven. Maybe you’re selling on Etsy, or you work for a fortune 500 company, but either way LinkedIn lets you focus on what you need to do to pay the bills and grow your business and there’s no need to pretend it’s anything but networking when you get online. When you say “show me the money” you mean it, and you've got the contacts to prove it.

Snap Snap!! Look at me you say, as you throw your glorious moments of life experience out into the ether that is our internet. Hopefully a few will stick, but in the end, this is all about you, what you see and taste and smell, and experience as it happens moment by moment. You love food, and flowers, and your dog and you want everyone to know about it. You don't mind stopping to take a picture, in fact you can't help yourself - you are always capturing life around you. You might be an artist and love sharing your process, or your practice, or a yogi who can stretch in all kinds of bendy ways. Photos can be tagged the same way tweets can, so you can share your images with groups of people. So snap away diva - just make sure you save your best shots for your portfolio, because after using this app for a while you'll be ready for your own photoshoot in no time.

You're a collector allright. And a research fiend. And someone who likes making lists. You have all kinds of great ideas for do-it yourself projects, steampunk outfits, and recipes you are sure you'll forget if you don't keep them somewhere really easy to find. So many good ideas, and so little time. The whole thing might be a little like an online version of hoarders, but without having to clean anything out. You like the low maintenance approach that Pinterest gives you. You don't have to interact or converse with others, just point and click and poof it's in your magic box. And anyone who wants to look at what you're working on can see and share and add their favourites to their files. No muss, no fuss. If you love Pinterest, and you are an artist or crafty, keep in mind that a great way to promote your business is to share pins of your work on Etsy.com or Tumblr or just about anywhere else, as a way of generating more interest in your work. So enjoy hoarding... but don't forget to cross-promote.

You must be hungry!! Did we mention you like to consume stuff? You reached this point because you spend most of your online time sharing fluffy content, playing games and watching cool videos. There’s nothing wrong with that, we love fluffy stuff too, but it might be time for you to branch out. You might like Medium or Tumblr as alternative ways to share all the soft and gooey love you have in your heart (and the cat videos too). If you are into playing games Facebook can be a ton of fun. The world is just waiting for your next creation. Bring it on. ON the other hand, right now you’re hot hot hot and you’ve got a quiz to prove it. Buzzfeed is making waves, and news right now for breaking stories. Buzzfeed video on YouTube comes in many different flavours and there’s something for everyone. And since Buzzfeed is going viral like a bad meme, enjoy the spotlight.

You won’t mind that there are fewer people hanging out here than there are on Facebook. You’ll have a nice connection direct into YouTube, a billion ways to share content and you know your google+ page will catch on eventually. Plus Guy Kawasaki hangs out here, so you know it’s really the place to be. Compared to Facebook, you’ve found the good stuff, a company that promises not to be evil (although we do wonder...), a whole suite of desktop apps, video chat software and other great tools for running your business online and offline. You’re happy to leave the bulk of your friends and family elsewhere to post their baby pics, you’ve got a cross between linkedin and Facebook. Well hello there Twerp. We can hear you tweeting in the background of every event you go to. We hear you repeating the cool quotes you read like a mockingjay in a forest with Katniss. You are the news, you are ongoing in your quest to keep us updated on the latest and what you are up to day in and day out. 140 characters is a kind of Zen exercise in which you must distill your message down to the simplest point. No mucking about or extra adjectives. Strike out the poetic turn of phrase if you are over your limit and focus on essentials. Twitter works best when you reach out and talk to others, and don’t just Tweet @ others. Plus Twitter gives you easy ways to connect with celebrities, engage in social commentary and share your witty thoughts about the Oscars as they are happening - Joan Rivers, the home game.
