Location means everything, and Tampa Bay is situated quite perfectly. Tampa Bay is located on the west coast of Florida along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Not only does Tampa Bay offer up some incredible inshore fishing for redfish, speckled trout, snook and more, it is also in close proximity to other great fishing locations. This includes the Atlantic coast, freshwater lakes and rivers, and offshore fishing. Not only that, but Tampa Bay is also a great hub for some of the state’s famous attractions, which we will talk about more later.

2. Freshwater Fishing

Florida is highly regarded as one of the premiere places to catch largemouth bass. Lake Okeechobee and Lake Toho are known by bass anglers around the world and Florida-strain largemouth bass are some of the best there are. Lake Okeechobee and Lake Toho are merely a couple hour drive from Tampa Bay. This makes these highly prized lakes an easy day trip. But these lakes aren’t the only places to pick up monster largemouth bass. Most any pond, lake or river in Florida has the potential to produce high quality bass due to the climate and ecology. Tampa itself has many ponds and lakes, but the Hillsborough River is one of the most popular freshwater fishing spots locally. So go explore and find your next honey hole.

3. Year-Round Fishery

Tampa Bay is a popular destination for snowbirds. These are people who travel to the sunshine state when their northern habitat becomes too cold to tolerate, and if you’re an angler, then Tampa Bay is paradise in the cooler months. The spring fed rivers surrounding the Tampa Bay area keep the inland waters warm, thus giving the fish and other marine life a great place to thrive. Inshore fishing is available all year round due to Tampa Bay’s mild winters- making it the go-to area for winter fishing.

4. Bucket List Fsh / Via

Whether you’re an inshore, offshore or freshwater angler, Tampa Bay has a fish that is sure to be on anyone’s bucket list. From 18+lb. Largemouth bass, 50+lb. redfish, 200lb. tarpon to 400lb. Goliath Grouper, Tampa Bay is your bucket list hotspot. If the bucket list fish of your dreams swims in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, then make a short two hour drive to the east coast where you can head out to the Gulf Stream for 1,000lb. Blue Marlin! Regardless, your next personal best fish may be lurking right behind your next cast in Tampa Bay.

5. Family Fun / Via

I get it. I’m a dad and a husband, but I’m also a hardcore angler. When picking a family fun getaway, it is sometimes difficult to find a destination that appeals to the whole family. This is not the case when you visit Tampa Bay. My wife loves the beautiful beaches, and the shopping, and we can even get dressed up for a fantastic night on the town. The kids, who also love the beach and fishing, can also beg you to take them to Disney World, only an hour away. There’s also Cape Canaveral, on the east coast, just over two hours away. Might as well wet a line while you’re over there too! As you can see, there are many reasons why Tampa Bay is the ultimate fishing destination. But don’t take my word for it; plan your own family fun fishing vacation to Tampa Bay and see it all for yourself!
