Aussies Are Sharing What They Miss Most When Living Abroad And It's Super Insightful

"Not being able to find a place that does a parma."

We always want what we can't have and for some of us, that's the little things we take for granted while living in Australia that somehow send us spiralling if we're lucky enough to jet overseas long enough to start missing them.

We suddenly start craving things from back home and play them out in our heads as better than they actually are — just like how we love to stay awake at night romanticising a past relationship that was actually quite shit. I see you.

Reddit user u/mungis got me thinking with their question "Australians living overseas, what do you miss most about Australia?" Here are some of the best answers.

    1. "Coffee, safety, tomato sauce, not having to tip and the police being more laidback."

    2. "Tasmanian leatherwood honey and Vegemite. I sent it to the in-laws when they were in the Old Dart."

    3. "Clean air and bushwalking — we have the best birdlife."

    4. "I miss the lack of overcrowding and the ability to say 'good morning' to a stranger without getting weird looks. Also, the way we give each other a little wave when driving in the country."

    5. "Australia's toilet design and the general capability of the sewage systems."

    6. "Seeing the sky. I was in China and they had one day where you could see the sky. I took photos just to prove it did exist."

    7. "Sunrises/sunsets, local wildlife — especially the birds, Twisties, the accent, lots of sport and perfect beer weather."

    8. "I miss the banter and people not judging me for having a sarcastic sense of humour. I miss good coffee, remote beaches and diverse cuisine. Lorne, Fairhaven, fish and chips and Wilson's Prom. Isolation while hiking and overlooking stunning ocean vistas. Drunken meat pies."

    9. "Fresh fruit, road verges and space. Being able to run without someone occupying space near me."

    10. "Some of the wildlife. When I hear a kookaburra it makes me smile. Clean air and blue skies. I go away to get away from Australians and come back to get away from crowds."

    11. "Hands down it's the weather, but I’m now living in Sweden so that might explain it. Barbecue Shapes are a close second."

    12. "Chicken salt on chips."

    13. "Not being able to find a place that does a parma. Like, what the fuck, seriously."

    14. "Paddle Pops, Twisties, Milo, musk sticks and the sound of kookaburras."

    15. And lastly, "Tim Tams".
