5 Reasons You Should Go See 'Midnight Special' This Weekend

Besides the fact that, you know, it's special.

1. It's Unlike Anything You've Seen Before

I was lucky enough to see a press screening of Midnight Special ahead of it's release this Friday, and it was an experience. If you are a science-fiction fan, or just enjoy going to the movies in general, go see it! It's truly something special and stands out from the pack of generic, run-of-the-mill movies being pumped into theaters week in and week out.

2. It Keeps You Interested

From the minute it started, I was completely invested in Midnight Special. There's just something about it that keeps you wondering what's going to happen next. It was an awesome time at the movies, and the first time in a long time that I didn't leave a theater underwhelmed. Basically, see it before it gets ruined for you.

3. It's A Different Kind of Super-Powered Movie

Just a heads up, I'm trying to keep this spoiler free (you're welcome), so I'm going to give you as little information as I possibly can. Midnight Special centers around a young boy named Alton who is... different, to say the least. Alton has powers, but not the kind you're thinking. This isn't a Marvel movie, and as much as I love those films, I'm glad it isn't, and you will be too. It's a breath of fresh air in an age where everything is owned by Disney.

4. You've Seen the Cast Before

Going into Midnight Special, I knew basically nothing about it. All I knew was that the boy had powers, and that I liked everybody in it. I think the same would serve you well, as it adds to the films ability to grip you early and never let go. Midnight Special stars Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Boardwalk Empire), Jaeden Lieberher (St. Vincent, Aloha), Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man, Fargo), Joel Edgerton (The Gift, Warrior), and Adam Driver (Girls, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, duh!). Each of these actors turns in the performance of a lifetime, and under the direction of Jeff Nichols, they've truly made something unique. I'm not even kidding, you will seriously have your mind blown.

5. Jeff Nichols Has Yet to Disappoint

He's responsible for 2011's Take Shelter and 2012's Mud, both of which were fantastic movies. What makes Nichols work so great, is that you can tell he's making films out of pure passion. He doesn't care what people are going to think of it, he just does what he wants; writing and directing all of his own films. That type of attitude is so unique in the film industry today. Movies are being made left and right, but very few aren't obvious cash-grabs. Jeff Nichols is just a guy with a pen and a camera, making some seriously different films. His attitude should be enough to inspire us all to do whatever makes us happy, show it off to the world, and walk away with the drop of a mic: Leto-style.

Midnight Special hits theaters this Friday, March 18th. Check out the trailer above, and go see this movie!
