This Shoe-Tying Hack Is Going Viral On TikTok, And It Turns Out We've All Been Tying Our Laces Wrong
Millions of people just learned they've been tying their shoes all wrong.
Tying your shoes: It's something you learned to do as a kid, and you probably haven't questioned it since.

Well, a viral TikTok with over 4 million views is now teaching people a faster and better way to tie those laces, and frankly, my mind is blown. Welcome to 2021, people.

The hack, which was brought to the internet's attention by @BugzyMoran, is a simple maneuver that will have your shoes tied in literally one split second. Check it out:
First, you do the preliminary tie that you're used to — the one that just crosses the laces over each other.

Next...this is when things get wild. You hold each lace with your bottom three fingers, and then loop them around your index finger and thumb on each hand, like so:

(If that step looks confusing, watch the video. It's actually very easy when he breaks it down!)
Finally, you pull the loops through each other, and BOOM! Your laces are tied in a perfect knot, in under one second.

This maneuver is currently changing people's lives on TikTok, with nearly half a million likes so far. The video is captioned, "Why don't we teach this to our kids?" and tbh, I AGREE.

People who've tried this shoe-tying method are swearing by it — so naturally, I had to give it a whirl myself.

Step 1 was easy enough...since, y'know, it's the same basic crossover tie we've all been doing forever.

Step 2, on the other hand, was a bit confusing at first. I had to replay the TikTok a few times to figure out exactly how to position my fingers with the laces. But once you get the hang of it, it's easy! You simply grip the laces with your bottom three fingers on each hand, to anchor them...

...And then you loop the laces around your upper two fingers. The trick here is to loop the right-hand lace around your index finger first, and then bring it around your thumb. Then, on your left hand, you do the opposite — loop it around your thumb first, and then bring it around your index finger.

Look, I'm gonna level with you: This might be hard to understand in writing. Watch the video if you're confused.
Step 3 — pulling the two loops you've created into a nice, clean knot — was just as simple and satisfying as it looked in the video. And when i showed my dad how I could now tie my shoes in less than a second, he was decently impressed. Yes, I'm a 30-year-old man, showing my parents how I can tie my shoes. This is the world we live in now.
