The Director Of Taylor Swift's New Video Has Some Confusing Thoughts On Cultural Appropriation

"I am down for cultural appropriation. That sounds hot. Appropriate me."

So in case you missed it, Taylor Swift released a sneak preview of her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video on Friday.

Official #LWYMMDvideo world premiere. Sunday 8/27 at the @vmas

The preview only shows a few brief shots, but people immediately noticed some similarities between Taylor's ~new look~ and Beyoncé's "Formation."

    Simply Lemonade vs Ssips Lemonade

And so the internet did what it does best: made a whole bunch of memes about it.

"My daddy Pennsylvania, momma from Pennsylvania, You mix that Pennsyl with a Vania I am from Pennylvaniaaaa"

The director of the video, Joseph Kahn, defended himself against the copycat claims in a series of tweets.

Only 5 shots in the video have been released. You know nothing Jon Snow. :)

I've worked with Beyoncé a few times. She's an amazing person. The #LWYMMDvideo is not in her art space. Love and respect to Bey.

Also there's something to that "formation" shot I painted out and you haven't seen yet. Stay tuned Sunday :) #LWYMMDvideo #SneakyAsian

Many have called the similarities between Taylor's new aesthetic and Lemonade an example of cultural appropriation — saying that Swift, a white artist, is co-opting black culture to sell records.

And while Kahn claims the "LWYMMD" video isn't ripping off Beyoncé's work, his past tweets reveal some ~interesting~ views on cultural appropriation.

Everyone is so outraged at "cultural appropriation" we should just stay in our own separate but equal races...wait a minute...

I am down for cultural appropriation. That sounds hot. Appropriate me.

Kahn also directed Taylor's "Wildest Dreams" video in 2015, and was accused of whitewashing African history and celebrating colonialism. Kahn defended the video in a statement, and then made some racially charged jokes about the controversy on Twitter.

I never said I have black friends I'm not racist. I said I have SUPER HOT black friends I'm not racist.

Asians can't be racist. White or black, we don't care, all dogs taste the same to us.

The "Look What You Made Me Do" video will premiere tonight at the VMAs, and Kahn has assured fans it's actually very different from Lemonade. In the meantime, the memes will probably keep coming.

It looks like this is going to be a Taylor Swift's "Lemonade". Pumpkin Spice.
