The Iranian government has said that an Iranian general was among seven killed in an Israeli airstrike in Syria on Sunday.

Tehran issued the news in a statement published on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's website, the Associated Press reported.

The statement said General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi was killed in the strikes, while on assignment giving "crucial advice" to Syrians fighting Sunni rebels and Islamic extremists.

Allahdadi will be buried in the coming days, AP said.

The airstrikes also killed six Hezbollah militants, including the son of one of the group's former commanders on Sunday.

A Hezbollah official told the Associated Press that the strike in Golan Heights killed a “number” of its fighters, including Jihad Mughniyeh.

Mughniyeh was the son of Imad Mughniyeh, a top Hezbollah military commander assassinated in Damascus in 2008.

Sunday's airstrike targeted two Hezbollah vehicles, the official told the AP.

Reuters reported a total of five people were killed in the strike.

A Hezbollah field commander named Mohammed Issa was also among the dead, sources told the BBC. Israel told the BBC it would not comment on the reports.

Hezbollah, a militant group designated by the U.S. as a terror organization, has been fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's civil war.

Israel has launched several strikes against Hezbollah since the Syrian conflict began. Israel is trying to stop the Syrian government from transferring rockets to the group, the BBC reported.
