    7. Devilman: Crybaby

A person laughing in a pit of fire and smoke

This show embodies basically everything that anime was for me growing up: amazing animations and brutal gore. If you're familiar with the manga, you'll appreciate the references and throwbacks Masaaki Yuasa adapted into his work. This anime follows a sensitive demon-boy who is led into war against evil by his mysterious friend, Ryo, when demons reawaken. Honestly...the first episode is just *chefs kiss*.

    8. Anohana

After the death of one of them, five childhood friends grow apart as the years go on. Jintan, the original "leader" of the group starts to see her spirit. The group reunites when she demands they grant her final wish.

    9. Angel Beats!

This anime, for me, has a perfect balance of action and comedy and I just couldn't stop watching it. The story follows rebellious teens who fight in armed combat against one dispassionate girl's supernatural powers in an afterlife high school.

    10. Sword Art Online

A dystopian landscape with two people

I find it amusing that this anime takes place in the year 2022 like it's so far away. Gamers have lined up on launch day for Sword Art Online, a hotly-anticipated MMORPG that lets players connect to an immersive virtual reality world with special helmets called Nerve Gear. Players soon discover that not only are they unable to log out, but the only way they can return to their physical bodies is by beating the 100-level tower's final boss. Oh, and dying in the game means dying in real life so there's that.

    11. Death Note

However, they were aided by a Shinigami, or a Death God, whose responsibility is to send good spirits to the afterlife known as Soul Society as well as purifying Hollows and sending them there. During the attack, Rukia is injured and must transfer her powers to Ichigo, thus beginning his training as a Shinigami.

    14. Avatar: The Last Airbender

Literally everyone has at least heard of Avatar, right? In case you haven't, here's a breakdown: The world is divided into four elemental nations: The Northern and Southern Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. The Avatar holds the balance between these nations, but everything changed when the Fire Nation invaded. Only the Avatar, the holder of all four elements, can stop them, but when the world needs them the most...they disappear. A century goes by, and another Avatar is discovered, an Airbender named Aang, by Katara and Sokka. Together they must help Aang master the elements and save the world.

    15. Baki

    A person punching someone else

Baki Hanma trains with an intense focus and determination to become strong enough to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, the strongest fighter in the world. An epic showdown between violent death row inmates and Baki and his friends begins.

    16. Yu-Gi-Oh!

    TV Asahi

Did I own the cards? Yes. Did I play with them? Also yes. Yugi Moto solves an ancient Egyptian puzzle and brings forth a dark and powerful alter ego. Whenever he or his friends play, threatened by evil in Duel Monster Card Game, this alter ego comes out to play and challenges the wrongdoers to the Shadow Games: Life or Death situations that test the true nature of human beings. If they lose or cheat, they will suffer serious penalties that result in losing their sanity or even their lives. Dun dun DUNNN.

    17. Pokémon: Indigo League

    A person holding a Pokémon
    Oriental Light & Magic Inc

Unfortunately, they only have one season, but now is the perfect time to catch 'em all (or 53 episodes worth at least) on Netflix. Ash Ketchum, a 10-year-old boy, aspires to become the greatest Pokémon trainer in the world so he enlists the help of many friends, and his own Pokémon, Pikachu. Together, they search the world for new Pokémon while avoiding Team Rocket and other evil organizations along the way. Pika Pika!

    18. Blue Exorcist

A person being pinned down by other people
    A-1 Pictures

Rin Okumura never knew his real father and was raised by Fujimoto, a famous exorcist. After discovering that he's actually the son of Satan, Rin must join the True Cross Academy in order to master his abilities as an exorcist and defeat Satan himself.

    19. Ouran High School Host Club

    A group of students

Sometimes you just need a cute romance anime and this is the bee's knees. Haruhi Fujioka accidentally stumbles across the Ouran High School Host Club, a group of boys who entertain the girls of the school for profit. When she clumsily breaks an expensive vase, she is made to serve under them until her debt is paid off. She's soon made a Host, but must allow the Host Club customers to continue believing she's actually a boy.

    20. Erased

Two people standing with their backs turned to each other
    TV Kumamoto Co

Satoru Fujinuma is a struggling manga author with a supernatural ability to be able to prevent deaths by going back in time before an incident occurs. One day he is involved in an incident with his mother, prompting him to go back to change the events. However, he realizes he was sent back as a grade-schooler. Now he must begin a journey, using his ability to prevent the past from changing into an unfortunate future.

    21. Parasyte: The Maxim

A person sitting on a bed talking to a weird blob

I love a good horror anime and you should too, honestly. This story follows 17-year-old Shinichi Izumi who becomes partially infected by a Parasyte: a monster that butchers and consumes humans. Now, he must learn to co-exist with the creature if he is to survive both the life of a Parasyte and human.

    22. Food Wars!

A person standing next to an eatery with their hands on their hips
    JC Staff Co

After his father leaves their eatery in Japan, Souma begins studying in Engetsu Teahouse Culinary Academy to improve his cooking skills and to save the restaurant from closing. The problem is that only a few are able to graduate from it, and these few are the world's best gourmet of culinary.

    23. Toradora!

    TV Tokyo

I have to end the list with this adorable anime. Taiga Aisaka is a feisty, tiny, self-centered, and unexpectedly strong girl who lives in a new apartment next to Ryuji Takasu, but she has literally no idea how to take care of herself. Ryuji takes it upon himself to look after her by cooking and cleaning while they both attempt to help each other with their love life. It's light-hearted, fun, and just so cute.
