11 Movies About Deadly Threats From Outer Space

Does the thought of watching another Award Ceremony make you want the world to end? These movies are the answer. But sadly only one was produced by Michael Bay.

1. The Day the Sky Exploded (1958)

In this Italian science-fiction film, an atomic rocket malfunctions, knocking a giant cluster of asteroids towards Earth. Paul Hubschmid, Fiorella Mari, and Madeleine Fischer star in the early disaster film.

2. A Fire in the Sky (1978)

Starring Richard Crenna and Elizabeth Ashley, A Fire in the Sky is a made-for-TV film about a deadly comet that devastates Phoenix. The movie, based on a short story by Paul Gallico, received two Emmy nominations

3. Meteor (1979)

Another ‘70s disaster movie, Meteor follows a group of scientists who try to divert a deadly meteor by enlisting the help of the Soviets. Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Brian Keith, and Henry Fonda all star in the film which received an Academy Award for Best Sound.

4. Asteroid (1997)

Asteroid is a TV miniseries about the U.S. attempts to divert a deadly asteroid. The Emmy-winning film stars Michael Biehn, Carlos Gómez, Annabella Sciorra, and Brian Hill.

5. Armageddon (1998)

Perhaps one of the best-known disaster films, Armageddon follows a group of deep-core drillers who are the only thing standing between Earth and an asteroid projected to kill millions. Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, Liv Tyler, and Ben Affleck star in the blockbuster directed by Michael Bay.

6. Deep Impact (1998)

Released two months before Armageddon, Deep Impact is the tale of a massive comet on a collision course with Earth and scientists desperate efforts to stop it. Robert Duvall, Téa Leoni, Elijah Wood, and Morgan Freeman star in the film.

7. Impact (2008)

A television mini-series, Impact takes a slightly different approach by having a meteor show put Earth on a collision course with the moon. The series stars David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge, Benjamin Sadler, and Steven Culp.

8. Meteor Apocalypse (2010)

A Christian film, Meteor Apocalypse is about large comet debris that strikes Earth. Joe Lando, Claudia Christian, and Cooper Harris star in the disaster flick with religious undertones.

9. Melancholia (2011)

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård, and Kiefer Sutherland, Melancholia is about two sisters struggling to come to terms with their fate as Earth is set to collide with a rogue planet. Dunst’s role earned her Best Actress at the 64th Cannes Film Festival.

10. Collision Earth (2012)

In this television movie, a freak disaster with the sun knocks Mercury out of orbit and into Earth’s path. Kirk Acevedo, Diane Farr, and Chad Krowchuk star in the not-so-highly-rated film.

11. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

The only (intentional) comedy on the list, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is, in director Lorene Scafaria’s words, “the story of boy meets girl with a really ticking clock.
