Two Truths And A Lie: Ryan Gosling Edition

The famous on-screen lovers actually [disliked each other](http://www.avclub.com/article/ryan-gosling-apparently-didnt-rachel-mcadams-revea-206537) off-screen. Gosling [worked with](http://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/rachel-mcadams-audition-for-the-notebook-movie-watch-2014256) director Nick Cassavetes during the audition process for the leading lady. New Line Cinema thought the birds were "[too much](http://www.vh1.com/celebrity/2014-07-01/the-notebook-nick-cassavetes/)" and wanted the scene nixed. Thankfully, this didn't happen in the final cut.

Gosling actually [said](http://collider.com/ryan-gosling-crazy-stupid-love-interview/) he felt more like Steve Carell's character Cal, than his own character. He had a hard time wrapping his head around his character, so he [changed him up](http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2011/07/questions_for_ryan_gosling.html). Co-star Emma Stone admitted that one of the submitted "working" titles included [_Titanic 2: The Search for Jack and Rose_](http://abc7.com/archive/8276776/).

Gosling actually loved the oral sex scene, saying it "[felt real](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/10/ryan-gosling-sex-scene-wi_n_806678.html)." In fact, the entire filming felt real, since he, Williams, and their on-screen daughter Faith Wladyka "[played house](http://www.theguardian.com/film/2011/jan/09/ryan-gosling-blue-valentine-film)" during filming. Heath Ledger's untimely death made Williams try and give up the role, because she felt like she should be there for [her daughter](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/starsandstories/8246605/Blue-Valentine-Michelle-Williams-interview.html) first.

Gosling learned about the audition [from his friends](http://www.bbc.co.uk/films/2001/12/04/ryan_gosling_the_believer_interview.shtml), not cousins. His Mormon upbringing was what made Bean realize Gosling "[understood something about religion](http://www.nerve.com/screeningroom/film/believer)," and how both Mormonism and Judaism can isolate a person. Sadly, Gosling's mom did have a [mini meltdown](http://www.theguardian.com/film/2008/mar/14/1) when she first started watching the film, due to both his character's attitude towards his heritage and life in general.

Penn actually [improvised that line](http://filmschoolrejects.com/features/ruben-fleischer-gangster-squad-interview-jgiro.php/2) and director Reuben Fleischer kept it in the film. _Gangster Squad_ did shoot in that many [different locations](http://collider.com/ruben-fleischer-gangster-squad-interview/) over that time period, and at one point during filming, Sgt. Jerry Wooter's real children [told Gosling](http://screenrant.com/gangster-squad-movie-interviews-ryan-gosling-emma-stone-josh-brolin/) stories of their famous father.

Clooney [said](http://www.ew.com/article/2011/10/05/george-clooney-ides-of-march-time-interview) they wanted Gosling for the role since the beginning. Clooney co-wrote the script with Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon, [based off Willimon's play](http://screenrant.com/ides-of-march-interview-grant-heslov-rothc-135135/). Gosling admitted he "[wants to direct some day](http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/movies/ryan-gosling-and-ides-of-march.html?pagewanted=all)," and enjoyed watching Clooney work during filming.

He also [said](http://screenrant.com/interview-ryan-gosling-drive-rothc-131693/) his character was like a knight who needs to rescue the princess in the tower. Furthermore, Gosling [admitted](http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/drive_2011/news/1923553/ryan_gosling_on_drive_this_is_my_superhero_movie/) that although he's been contacted about doing superhero movies, _Drive_ felt like the one he wanted to do.

Derek Cianfrance [directed](http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2013/04/05/10-things-to-know-before-you-see-the-place-beyond-the-pines/) Gosling in _Blue Valentine_ two years before _The Place Beyond the Pines_, and he [admitted](http://www.focusfeatures.com/article/the_roots_of_the_place_beyond_the_pines?film=the_place_beyond_the_pines) the script's first draft was over 160 pages long.

Director Craig Gillespie said he had the script for four years, not six, because "[nobody was interested](http://www.abc.net.au/atthemovies/txt/s2192444.htm)." Gosling did [bring the doll home](http://www.theguardian.com/film/2008/mar/14/1) to his mom's house every night during filming. Additionally, women on set taught him how to knit during the [all-day knitting scene](http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2013/01/ryan-gosling-hobby-knitting-interview).

Gosling [said](https://film.list.co.uk/article/1810-half-nelson-ryan-gosling-interview/) Fleck didn't initially think of him for the lead. _Half Nelson_ is [inspired](http://filmmakermagazine.com/archives/issues/summer2006/features/check_head.php#.VQxBCpPF9Hg) by the short film _[Gowanus, Brooklyn](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FREqWf-lUdc)_, which Fleck also directed and co-wrote.
