J. Cole - 4 Your Eyez Only

I've been wanting to review this album for a while now. Obviously, yes, it did come out in December, but that's ok. Hardly no music came out this week that I thought was worth reviewing so we'll go back a few months to hear my unwanted opinion on "4 Your Eyez Only".

Now the reason I have been wanting to review this is not because I think it's amazing, but really the opposite. I think if you want to go to sleep fast you should turn this tape on.

I mean that in the best way possible. No disrespect to Cole, I love Cole. I couldn't tell you how many times I have been caught singing "Power Trip" at the top of my lungs at a red light by the driver next to me. No shame.

Cole's discovery goes way further than Power Trip though. "The Warm Up," "Friday Night Lights," "Sideline Story," and "Born Sinner" were all amazing tapes in my opinion, with a lot of added longevity to the tracks.

I think were Cole went wrong is when he decided that this whole no features gig was going to be his thing. Sometimes I feel like Cole is in the studio and he thinks of a great potential collab but he doesn't do it because he feels so pressured to go platinum with no features.

I mean sure its cool, but what's the big deal.

In my opinion, great features can make a album. Adds different flavors to the songs instead of just hearing the same voice over and over.

The message in "4 Your Eyez Only" is great and I could never knock Cole's vision but if I were to tell you I listened to this tape more than three times since it came out then I would be lying.

See you all next week!
