5 Things That Happened In SC Politics This August: Drafts, Doctorates, And Dousing The Governor

An irreverent look at the week that was in SC politics

    We're back!

"5 Things" has been a bit sporadic this summer. With the Statehouse adjourning for the year back in June, a fairly quiet election season, and many people enjoying summer vacations, things just haven't exactly been hopping in the ol' Palmetto State.

Not to worry though. Even in an off-week South Carolina politics can still be bizarre:

    1. Throwing cold water on the governor

If you're active in social media politics, you've probably seen this by now. Gov. Nikki Haley posted video to YouTube on Thursday in an effort to promote the "Ice Bucket Challenge" currently making its way around the internet.

The idea of the challenge is simple: to help raise awareness for ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) research, the participant must either donate $100 to the ALS Association within 24 hours or else dump a bucket of ice water on their head and challenge others to donate.

The governor apparently chose the latter:

Haley's children Rena and Nalin agreed to pour cold water on their mother (they seemed happy to do it for, um, "charity" reasons). The governor challenged Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney to also take the challenge, along with SC natives Stephen Colbert and musician Edwin McCain. Haley encouraged the ALS donations before taking the proverbial "plunge."

The governor's campaign spokesman did not respond when South Carolina Radio Network asked if Haley donated herself or was just encouraging others to do so.

    2. Can we still call him "Doc" Rivers?

    3. Get to the Chopper!

    4. Beer with us!

    5. An escaped cougar? In Aiken? He's lion!
