5. Hathaway only had one audition for the movie, which took place during a 26-hour stopover in Los Angeles when she was flying to New Zealand to film an independent movie.

6. Despite not having time to do a screen test, Hathaway was cast on the basis of that audition.

7. During her audition Hathaway was asked to do a French accent, and at one point accidentally fell off her chair.

8. Meg Cabot said she was inspired to write the story because of her own life experiences: "I was inspired to write The Princess Diaries when my mom, after the death of my father, began dating one of my teachers, just as Mia's mom does in the book!"

9. Mia's father was not dead in the books and instead has testicular cancer, a plot which was not included in the movie.

10. The man who appears as Mia's father in a flashback writing a letter, and in the photograph on her shelf, was actually Anne Hathaway's father.
