It's always 2 am somewhere.
"I make a cake before I go out for the night."
Rebecca, 23, Stockholm
This idea is brilliant, and Kladkakka; a gooey chocolate cake, is perfect for the occasion. It takes barely any time to prepare, so you can whip it up while you get ready to go out. It's better after a few hours in the fridge, so enjoy your evening, and when you stumble home later, you have this enticing cake waiting for you.
"On my way home, it's a kebab; there is no other option! If it’s a bigger group, and you’re in a house, spaghetti is also good. Spaghettata Notturna! With oil, garlic and pepper."
Andrea, 30, Rome
Simple, tasty, and good for a crowd of revellers.
"Pizza. Kebabs. Two week old pasta that has been left up on the side, in brown sauce. Bacon sandwich. Frozen mixed vegetables with mayonnaise...wow, that just came back to me. Oh, and McDonalds, of course."
Simon, 24, Derbyshire
Here's to hoping he has some bacon and bread tomorrow night.
"Doritos! I get obsessions. I need a taco immediately."
Lisa, 23, Boston
"Anything with cheese. Anything with bread. Anything with combinations of cheese and bread. And Peanut Butter Puffins. Barbara knows whats up."
Max, 21, Boston
Bags of snack food require no cooking, no restaurant to be open, and can soak up booze like a champ.
"Giant burrito, chicken wings, In&Out, Jack in the Box. Once, I had eight tacos."
Shane, 25, Los Angeles
"Poutine, grilled cheese...everything."
Liz, 25, Toronto
Cheese curds, gravy, and fries. This is what dreams are made of.
"Everything! Tacos or hot dogs!"
Carmen, 19, Mexico City
In Mexico, hot dogs are served with all sorts of delicious toppings, like avocados, fresh cheese, or chili peppers. Quite often, they are wrapped in bacon and grilled. Yum.
"Ideally, meat pie."
Tom, 27, Brisbane
Australia is becoming quite well known for it's delicious pies, which are found everywhere from pubs to bakeries to 24 hour milk bars. It's frequently filled with hearty beef, vegetables like mushrooms or peas, and sometimes has other goodies like cheese or curry.
"Quite often, I’ll get home and cook steak for the flatties. Steak and eggs on toast. Sounds bizarre, tastes amazing. Also, Noodle Canteen is really convenient at 2 am."
John, 24, Wellington
Sounds like a pretty good flatmate.
"We call it comida del bajon. I like leftovers- especially cake- straight from fridge."
Dana, 19, Buenos Aires
Chocotorta is a popular Argentine cake that keeps well in the fridge. It's made by layering dulce de leche and cream with coffee soaked biscuits.
"Kebab. Kebab! It’s out of question. It’s obvious."
Orsolya, 23, Budapest
If you've ever been hungry at 2 am in Europe, you have probably had a doner kebab. It is ubiquitous all over the continent and made with by roasting meat on a large, rotating spit. Some are disgusting and greasy, some are delicious and lovingly topped with salads and sauce. If you can stand the wait, go for the shop with the longest queue.
"Oooooh McDonalds! Toasted cheese sandwiches. Ooooh, or a Snack Box; chicken, chips and ketchup."
Aoife, 27, Cork
The Snack Box comes from Supermac's, an Irish fast food chain that's open late.
"I eat fried chips! We also eat fried or stewed seafood or shrimp. And we drink beer."
Ming, 30, Tapei
With it's brilliant night markets, late night eating in Taiwan is sure to never disappoint.
Have a safe and happy New Year's, wherever you are!
