99 Fabulous Things That Actually Happened
It was the best of times, look, it really was: BuzzFeedOz 2014-19.
A long time ago, in a land far way (December 2013, Gadigal) BuzzFeed Australia's launch crew assembled.
Five years ago, they got to work.
This was the first homepage.
Some very hackneyed Australianisms were stuck on the wall because the founding crew were all Fair Dinkum Aussies.
We visited lots of wildlife parks (sometimes the koalas were awake). 🐨
We hired an edgy news reporter.
And were taught how to tweet by the best.
We started to get organised.
As our crew grew, we kept on visiting wildlife parks.
(Sometimes the animals came to us)
We got Christmas swag.
And our ranks swelled.
(Our dumb meme game took off...)
In 2015, we launched @BuzzFeedOzPol.
(It was so fun bringing our brand to the Big House)
We started doing proper news.
Breaking the internet. Interviewing proper talent. And Joe.
Our first sellers arrived from the US to get the $$$ flowing.
And as our office and revenue grew, we got some nice stuff.
And new, less daggy stickers!
We hired our first video producer. 👍
We started getting nominated for awards (= award night mayhem).
We got so big, we moved to a new space, with break out areas for meetings!
We had our first intake of fellows.
Folks won prizes (real champagne!) for megaviral posts.
BuzzFeeder of the Month (and Year).
And the ultimate honour of the BuzzFeedOz Viral Belt.
Hallomeme became an annual tradition.
(Jenna G won)
We started being taken more and more seriously.
And created an international incident or two. 🇷🇺😡
We had our first engagement. 💍
And our first baby.
Our amazing social media editor took us to 1m fans on Facebook (and then 2m!)
We worked bloody hard.
No seriously, we really, really did.
We had inspiring visitors.
And lots and lots of swag.
In 2016, we pivoted to video.
Opened an office in Parliament House (and hired an amazing political reporter based in Canberra).
And (thanks to our swelling sales team) we had increasingly big bashes. 🍻
Brilliant big bashes!
We did some really crazy shit on Facebook Live.
Like an interview with Australia's #1 (only?!) Bubble Wrap Wrestling Star.
Jelly Bean Counting?!
We nailed the 2016 election.
Our election night drinking game was second to none.
Ditto our political editor's election diary.
We made increasingly brilliant video.
With brilliant, natural raw talent.
And working really hard!
We had some pretty cute interns.
Human and animal.
The ABC won our inaugural BuzzFeed News Pub Quiz.
Some guy in the USA said some mean things about us.
We had brill birthday cakes.
In 2017 we moved to an even bigger office, and commissioned some awesome art.
Named our meeting rooms and studio after Aussie delicacies.
And (finally!) got our CEO to Australia. 🤙
We kept on working hard. ✌️
And kept on growing our reputation. Thanks for the shout-out Laurie!
Our brilliant biz team signed our biggest ever deal.
Giving eight European content creators the chance to travel around Australia with our brilliant Buzz Team. All expenses paid!
Winning BuzzFeed its first Cannes Golden Lion. 🦁

So many Publish Awards!
SUCH A THRILL!!!
We had some epic off-sites.

We loved to party.
Party like animals.
Party like it's 1999.
And we really did share the love.
So much love! ❤️
Amazing areas everyone! ✌️
