The Golden Globes Snubbed Female Filmmakers *Again* And I'm So Tired

    "For $1, name a woman."

Earlier today, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominations for the 2020 Golden Globes.

There were many incredible people, shows, and films nominated this year, but there were also some snubs — most notably, no woman was nominated in either the Best Director or Best Screenplay categories.

In its 77-year history, only five women have been nominated for Best Director (two twice), the most recent being Ava DuVernay for Selma in 2015. Only one woman has ever won — Barbra Streisand in 1984 for Yentl.

The lack of representation among the nominees sparked a ton of criticism:

me @ the golden globes director category

In the year of Fleabag, Killing Eve, Little Women, When They See Us, Booksmart, Harriet, Hustlers, Late Night and many more... No lady writers. No lady directors. Again. #GoldenGlobe https://t.co/dO13bRGqU6

Going to be another one of those years, eh?

Me seeing The Golden Globes yet again not nominate a female director

no female directors were nominated for a golden globe award....

golden globe said we ain't accept diversity and especially no female directors:-)

Me @ the Best Director and Best Screenplay categories #GoldenGlobes

no female directors were nominated....not a single female filmmaker

Dara, Dahe / DARA / BACKGRID

me taking todd phillips’s golden globe nomination and giving it to alma har’el, lorene scafaria, lulu wang, greta gerwig, marielle heller, melina matsoukas, olivia wilde, jennifer kent, or any other woman

Natalie Portman gave the Globes shit for snubbing Greta Gerwig two years ago and this year the HFPA responded, “Let’s do it again and raise you Ava DuVernay, too”

Addressing the backlash, HFPA President Lorenzo Soria told Variety, "What happened is that we don’t vote by gender. We vote by film and accomplishment. That's the answer. It would've been...anyway, that's the process of how we vote."

And as one user shared, many of these films have received excellent reviews and have been praised by both critics and fans. So...*in Oprah voice* what is the truth??

i hate people who comment “maybe the female directors should make good movies!”

What was your favorite movie directed or written by a woman this year? Tell us in the comments!
