Amanda Gorman Talked About "The Reality Of Black Girls" After Being Racially Profiled By A Security Guard

"He demanded [to know] if I lived there because, 'You look suspicious.'"

Early this year, Amanda Gorman made history as the youngest person to ever write a poem for a president's inauguration.

Yesterday, just six weeks after performing on a national stage, the 22-year-old poet was profiled on her way home.

Quote-tweeting her previous comments about living in a "contradictory society," Amanda wrote, "A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded [to know] if i lived there because 'you look suspicious.'"

A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight. He demanded if I lived there because “you look suspicious.” I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology. This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat. https://t.co/MmANtQqpBs

"In a sense, he was right," she continued in a second tweet. "I AM A THREAT: a threat to injustice, to inequality, to ignorance."

"Anyone who speaks the truth and walks with hope is an obvious and fatal danger to the powers that be."

As Amanda said in her inaugural poem, "We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation..."
