This Woman Claims You Can Make Cookie Dough With Chickpeas, So I Decided To Try It For Myself

Cookie dough without the salmonella? Tell me more.

I personally love cookie dough, but haven't felt super comfortable eating it ever since hearing about a little thing called salmonella. So when I saw this recipe by TikTok user @nicole_thenomad explaining how to make safe-to-eat cookie dough using chickpeas, I was like, "I'm listening..."

So far, the TikTok has more than 1.3 million views.

Results for the recipe were a little mixed. Some said it was great...

...while others said it was not so great.

Since I'll try literally anything I see on TikTok, especially when there's dessert involved, I decided to get to the bottom of whether or not this chickpea dough did, in fact, taste good. For science!

The recipe was pretty simple and only required a few ingredients:

After rinsing my chickpeas, I threw them and all of the other ingredients in a blender and went to town. Easy breezy!

But the blending process wasn't as smooth (pun intended) as I had hoped. Here's what my concoction looked like after my fourth attempt. As you can see, there were still a few whole chickpeas in there. I don't think this would be an issue if you have a more high-quality blender, but mine started to smell like it was burning, so I decided to stop and call it good.

Finally, I threw some in a bowl and added the chocolate chips! In terms of pure aesthetics, it looked A LOT like cookie dough.

In terms of texture, I thought it was shockingly similar to the real thing, with the same level of thickness and silky smooth mouthfeel that I associated with my mom's cookie dough growing up. However, when it came to the actual taste, I thought the dough was good but juuuust missed the mark. The aftertaste was a little flour-y and it lacked some of the sweetness that makes cookie dough SO satisfying. Still yummy, but not identical!

Overall, I think this recipe is a good choice if you're looking for a semi-healthy treat or just want to get your cookie dough fix without consuming raw eggs. I also love that it's vegan and can be made gluten-free! Just know that it won't be EXACTLY like the real thing. But hey, at least there's a ton more protein thanks to the chickpeas!
