The Mitr Trust, a Delhi-based charity, is aiming to launch India's first exclusively transgender modelling agency.

The organisation has started a crowdfunding campaign to finance the endeavour, aiming to support five aspiring models through a portfolio shoot with a top fashion photographer.

The trust, which is headed by model Rudrani Chettri, is teaming up with fashion stylist Rishi Raj to make the agency a reality.

Chettri believes the agency can "raise awareness about the serious issues of discrimination and marginalisation" that the LGBT community faces.

"In 2014 Indian courts passed a law recognising us as a third gender entitled to equal rights and protection under law. We celebrated then, but in reality nothing much has changed, in fact things have become much harder at the ground level," she added on the GoFundMe page.

The funding will also help keep the charity running, which provides a safe space to young transgender people facing intense physical, sexual and emotional abuse.
