This Upcoming Web-Series About India's Underground Hip-Hop Scene Is Gonna Be Off The Hook

"Hip-hop is not about driving two Mercedes or sniffing cocaine... Hip-hop is life, dude."

Online portal 101India's upcoming show, HipHop Homeland, is an in-depth look at the burgeoning Indian underground hip-hop scene.

It is clear from the get-go that they aren't messing around – these are real hip-hop artists who take their professions very, very seriously.

The series, which premieres on January 20, will feature various artists from Mumbai, Kashmir, Shillong, Punjab, Kolkata and parts of South India.

Cyrus Oshidar, head of 101India, told BuzzFeed India, "Hip-hop is not universally recognised in India and there is a clear generation gap. The internet will be its biggest ally."

"Mainstream is popular, not necessarily cool", he added. Street cred is always more appealing to young people, and this has street cred."

"The rappers here sing in their local languages about the issues that matter to them. It’s nice to finally see the emergence of Indian "rebels" with a cause."

For fans of commercial rap, this series promises to be an eye-opener, exposing some of India's most dedicated and talented artists to the masses.
