12 Reasons To Be Hyped For The Black Widow Movie

Here are a few of the things we cannot wait to see in the Black Widow movie.

To say we have been waiting long time for this movie is an understatement, as I'm sure all Marvel fans would agree. So of course there are a lot of things we are looking forward to seeing in the long awaited Black Widow solo film.

Years of waiting, Scarlett Johansson's brilliant performances, the many trailers, the amazing cast and the constant supply of news has kept us all very eager to see what the film has in store.

Here are a few of the things we cannot wait to see in Marvel Studios' Black Widow.

    1. A past catching up to her...

    Marvel / Via

As Natasha Romanoff said in Avengers 2012, "I've got red in my ledger, and I'd like to wipe it out."

Before she was SHIELD's finest, Black Widow was SHIELD's most wanted, which resulted in Nat making plenty of enemies and burning her fair share of bridges, along the way to her place with the Avengers. It looks like Taskmaster may just be part of the darker chapters of Nat's past. Although Nat was never one to look to the past, she will finally have to face the demons she's been running from all these years.

    2. Taskmaster

Natasha Romanoff is about to come face to face with a powerful figure with an important connection to her past. Taskmaster's greatest strength are their photographic reflexes which allow them to mimic their opponent's every move during a battle. In the Black Widow trailer we see them imitating the fighting styles of Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Panther.

You can also see Taskmaster studying footage of Black Widow's combat technique from when she infiltrated the Hammer Industries Headquarters and fought all (or should I say totally kicked ass of) the guards in Iron Man 2. There is also speculation that Taskmaster could in fact be a women, possibly a figure from Natasha's past?

    3. The Red Room

Where it all began for a young Natasha Romanoff.

As Nat first reveals to Bruce Banner in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), the Red Room is where herself and the rest of the Widows are raised and trained to become assassins, long before Nat was even on SHIELD's radar. The Red Room is now controlled by the person controlling Taskmaster who forces the young recruits to do their bidding against their will. Including going after Nat and Yelena. Which means Nat will finally have to face the organization that caused her so much pain, more than any fist or bullet could.

    4. The Sisterly Bond of Nat and Yelena

    Marvel / Via

One thing we never got to see in all her years in the MCU is Natasha Romanoff in a sibbling like relationship like this. Captain America had Bucky, Iron Man had Rhodey, Thor had Loki and now Natasha has Yelena.

The relationship at the core of the Black Widow movie, is that of Natasha and Yelena. A bond that was formed during their childhood, and one that is about to be re-awoken.

Having both been through the horrors of The Red Room, in particular, the experiments performed on the girls when they come of age. Nat apologizes to Yelena for not going back for her, so as to keep her from the same fate.

With Nat and Yelena working together throughout the movie, we get a deeper look into their relationship, and how Yelena regards Nat.

“Essentially it's about these two girls repairing themselves. These girls have been through a huge amount of hurt, and it's them getting together and trying to fix each other up. If you think about all those films, and you think about all those supposed superheroes, when do you see pain and when do you see what it takes to be that?" - Florence Pugh

    5. Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova

    Marvel / Via

Florence Pugh has been making waves in Hollywood, with her roles in Little Women, Fighting with My Family and now as Yelena Belova in Black Widow. Just like Natasha, Yelena is a headstrong, competitive and skilled assassin, or she was. Although she refers to Nat as her sister, the two are not biologically related. Nat and Yelena have shared enough harrowing experiences to earn the "sister" dynamic.

"We all knew that we were doing something quite special and unique and something that hasn't really been done in the Marvel films before. I think we’ve made something very raw and very painful and very beautiful and I think people are going to be really surprised by the outcome of a big action film having that much heart." - Florence Pugh

Yelena Belova may just be the one to carry on Black Widow's legacy when all is said and done.

    6. A dysfunctional family... of sorts

    Marvel / Via

Nat and Yelena head back home to Russia to enlist the help of two people who have been like parental figures to them, Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz). These two along with Yelena (Florence Pugh) make for a somewhat dysfunctional family, but it more than makes up for the family that Nat never got to have when she was young.

“I thought it would be a straightforward action movie, and then it wound up being a real character study of a dysfunctional family." - David Harbour

    7. David Harbour as Red Guardian

    Marvel / Via

From the moment it was announced that David Harbour would be playing Red Guardian, fans of the Stranger Things actor have been beyond hyped to see him in the MCU. Harbour plays Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, who is described as the Russian version of Captain America. A soviet soldier with advanced weapons and combat training. In the Black Widow movie, Alexei is seen as somewhat of a father figure to Nat, diverting from what his character was like in the comics, to create an unusual family dynamic and a very different dynamc between Nat and The Red Guardian.

    Empire Magazine / Via

He’s this guy who is closely linked to Natasha back in the day. I don’t think it’s been quite revealed exactly how, but I think you can see in the family dynamic that he was a bit of a fatherly figure to her. I think the great thing about the Red Guardian is he really is– he was the Captain America of his day for Russia. And he was the great hope of Russia, in a certain sense.” - David Harbour

    8. A young Natasha Romanoff

    Via Marvel / Via

A Black Widow solo movie would not be complete without a look at Natasha as a child, and we are getting just that. Twelve year old Ever Anderson, daughter of Milla Jovovich and director Paul Anderson (Resident Evil franchise) will play a young Natasha Romanoff in the film.

We will be seeing the long awaited flashbacks into Nat's past that we have been waiting for. I for one cant wait to see what little Natalia Romanova was like as a kid. What her family was like then, and what drove them apart.

    9. Budapest

    Marvel Studios / Via Giphy

We have seen Natasha and Clint reference Budapest in Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, it has become somewhat of a running gag, a mission that had gone horribly wrong, and now we are finally getting the answer to the question, "what the hell happened in Budapest?". It had been pretty clear since we first heard the news of a Black Widow origin film that this would most likely be a part of the story, in an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Scarlett Johansson confirmed that the Black widow movie will in fact reveal what really happened on the Budapest mission.

"You finally get to know what happens in Budapest. I'm nervous about it, it's like a nervous excitement. You know, we've been sitting on this film for over a year, and it's been ten years in the making. I'm super proud of it." - Scarlett Johansson

    10. Cameos!

    Marvel / Via

If we're really lucky, we may just see a few more Avengers characters making a guest appearance in the Black Widow movie. We already know Tony Stark is gonna make an appearance but who else? It's a long shot but, knowing the MCU, I'm sure we're in for a cameo or two.

    11. Scarlett Johansson's final appearance in the MCU

MCU Direct / Via Facebook: MCUDirect

This film is an important one for many reasons, and a very special one for Scarlett herself. This will be the last time we see her put on that leather suit, since we all know what comes next, in Endgame.

"I think it will take some time for it to sink in. It’s been such a constant in my life for a decade of time. Every 18 months, coming back to this family and continuing the journey with everyone… I think we all probably have mixed feelings about it, at least in specific scenes, but I really had a sense of accomplishment after shooting finished on Black Widow. I feel like I tried it all this time around. I really got to go to all those uncomfortable places and explore certain recesses of her.” - Scarlett Johansson

    12. Black Widow finally in the spotlight!

    Marvel / Via

Last but certainly not least, this is Black Widow's time to shine! This time there's no Hawkeye backing her up, or Captain America or Iron Man to back up. This is Natasha Romanoff finally showing us who she really is. This is THE Black Widow movie we've been waiting for.

“I’m just excited to see the real Black Widow. She’s not a classic hero, because she has a dark past. You get to see all these facets of her that we’ve never ever seen before.” - Cate Shortland, Director

Black Widow is the culmination of a 7 movie career in the MCU that has spanned across 10 years. Iron Man 2, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and now this, Black Widow.

“This film is very much a result of that journey, my own personal journey. We’re going to be able to create something that’s a different flavor for the Marvel Universe.” - Scarlett Johansson

    Marvel Studios

After how Natasha Romanoff's story ended in Avengers: Endgame, this movie in particular is going to be an emotional one for fans. Black Widow's sacrifice in Endgame was one that we will not soon forget. One that saw Nat in a new light. I guess this will have to be the closure we never got.

What a fitting way to say goodbye to such an iconic character than with her own solo movie.

You've seen Natasha Romanoff the SHIELD agent, you've seen Black Widow the Avenger, you've seen her as a friend, an ally, a sidekick and much more. But this is Natasha like you have never seen her before.

    Marvel Studios

This, is her story. Black Widow is FINALLY premiering on July 9th 2021.
