My daughters get this all the time, “How come you’re all blonde and pale and your mum is tanned?”. I’m half Greek/Italian, have dark olive skin and super curly black hair and my husband (their father) is Swedish/Irish he’s blonde, with bright blue eyes, they just take after him. It drives me mad. People are so ignorant, I’d somewhat expect it from kids, they’re curious, but I get these kinds of questions from adults. I’ve also had “Oh, you have a Welsh accent, I was expecting a foreign one” or “Can I braid your hair into cornrows?” Um, no…or “Speak Italian or Greek for me”, sorry, but I don’t know how. I honestly want to punch these ignorant people in the face, Argh!

For the longest time, I thought Jackie Chan was my dad, and I’m not even Asian!, my mum and dad never ever thought to correct me either. I can still remember the amusement on my teachers faces, when I’d tell them my father was a famous movie star - cringe.  My uncle used to tell me, if I was ever naughty, a bunch of ginger men would come to my room in the night and kill me. For the longest time, I was terrified of ginger people. Happy to say I’ve grown out of that phobia :)  My sister would tell me that there was an old scary clown called Mr Ralph that lived in my wardrobe, and If I ever misbehaved, he’d eat me (my family are psychopaths), I was about 4 when I called her out about it (she was 18), so one night, while I was asleep, she decided to jump out of my wardrobe wearing a clown mask. Safe to say, I’ve never really grown out of that phobia, and I didn’t sleep in my room for a very long time after that.  And for the longest time, she told me that ketchup was the blood of little girls. I can’t even look or go near the stuff, it makes me panic.

Every single day, I still get this. I travel a lot, and my first name (Seren), is lost to people. I get Sir-ren, Surren, Seh-en (thinking that the R was silent), so I just learn to live with any variation. My middle name is Madale (Mah-dah-lay), which would always get changed to Madeline, and my maiden name is Itali-Grey (Ih-taaahh-lay: emphasis on the tah part), but would always get changed to Italy in school. Now my surname is Llewellyn, and that get’s mixed up too. So I’ve just given up, and take any form of my name.

The worst party I was ever invited to, was my nieces 7th birthday party (her bday is a day before mine) and my sister had hired a clown. I hate them, they’re my worst phobia. So I get there, and this evil looking, demonic clown walks over to me with a cupcake, singing happy birthday to me, I start to panic, I kept begging him to leave me alone, the idiot wouldn’t listen. It got to the point where this thing had me cornered at the bar, so I did whatever I could to get out of it, I threw whatever I could get my hands on, at him (which happened to be a bar stool). Safe to say, he wasn’t happy being hit in the head by a flying bar stool, he called the police, and my nieces party was ruined. When the police saw how terrified he’d made me, they gave him the bigger telling off lol. I was 19 when this all happened, my nieces friends still laugh at me, 4 years later.
