Building A New Hope
Monique Ellsworth serves as the Executive Director for The Kearney Center. Located in Tallahassee, FL, The Kearney Center is a state-of-the-art facility that provides shelter for over 350 adults nightly. This one-stop shop provides more than just overnight shelter for those who are experiencing economic hardship or homelessness. This facility also provides services that will enable individuals to connect with on-site social services, case management, and other programs that will assist in redeveloping and building a new foundation for one to have a fresh start. As Executive Director Ms. Ellsworth is responsible for the overall operations of the 24-hour center. Having such a large traffic flow daily, operating this center requires community support through more than 50 agencies and organization partners that meet the needs of a multitude of people from all walks of life. Tony Brown the General Manager of Alsco in Tallahassee, FL understood the need for the center to have clean linens, so Alsco washes over 14 thousand pounds of linens every single month free of charge. Another way the Kearney center engages the community is by having a garden onsite which was planted by master gardeners that harvest all the vegetables they grow and use them in the center’s kitchen. This helps with the serving of 600 meals a day at the Kearney Center. Safety was a huge priority during the development stage of the Kearney Center. Every client will go through the registering process where clients are given an ID card, which gains them access into rooms within the center. Women’s ID cards gain them access into the women's quarters in the center and a male’s ID card would only give him access into the men’s quarters in the center. Cards will not work or allow access into the opposite sexes’ quarters. From first stepping into the Kearney Center you can feel the compassion, understanding, willingness to serve, and patience within all the staff and volunteers of the center. Ms. Monique Ellsworth has done a great job overseeing a center that exudes these characteristics. The Kearney Center is a new hope for individuals and families in Tallahassee, FL. Teaching Your Child How To Better Deal With Anxiety
Children in your neighborhood wait in queue as they prepare for the arrival of the school bus. However, just when the bus arrives your child says he cannot take the bus. He does not want to be in the bus and that his stomach starts to feel bad - these are just some of the many warning signs that your child has anxiety. Even if something is already a part of your child’s routine and even if a certain task does not require rocket science to figure out, your child still complains about having stomach pains. No matter how you reassure him, you still find yourself getting frustrated at his responses. Don’t worry. You are not alone in this daunting situation. In fact, statistics shows that one out of eight children was found to suffer from anxiety. The good news is that there are many ways to help your child cope with the situation while you also save your sanity. Check out the following tips. Stop giving reassurances. Parents usually have the habit of reassuring their kids by saying “It’s okay. Don’t worry I’m here.” Or, “Stop crying, everything is going to be alright. ”But, no matter what you say, the child’s ears won’t hear it at all. Although she wants to listen and believe every reassuring word you say, her brain refuses to do so. This is because during periods of anxiety, your child’s brain is being bombarded with chemicals that are needed for that “survival mode” to activate. So, other mental processes won’t take place, making it impossible for your child’s brain to comprehend your reassuring words. Instead of giving reassuring words, let your child take deep breaths with you. Then, make your child feel that you understand that he or she is afraid of something. Even if you do not know exactly what it is that she’s afraid about, you completely understand how she or he feels. In other words, empathize with her. Don’t force her brain to believe that there is nothing to worry about. Instead find a way to keep her calm and only then will you be able to help him reduce his feelings of anxiety. Of course, as a parent, do not worsen the situation by feeling guilty. You are definitely an amazing parent and that you’re doing the best you can. Let your child realize that worrying is normal. Don’t keep on telling your child to stop worrying. Otherwise, you will only be making her worry more about her worries. Tell him that it is completely part of being human to worry about things. Let them know that it is part of our innate defense that enables our body to fight or flee from a dangerous or highly stressful situation. Avoid making her feel that something is not normal about him because he worries about something. Once your child realizes that worrying is normal it will become easier for him to calm down. Teach your child how to evaluate her own thoughts. You may do this by playing with a “bubble game” with your child. These bubbles are like those conversation bubbles that she reads from a comic book. For every thought she has in her mind, there should be a corresponding bubble to it. Then, let her catch each of these bubbles one by one. But, let her assess each bubble by laying out the facts. You and your child must work together towards presenting evidences to support each worried thought. Through this, she will be able to figure out if her worries are unfounded or indeed worth worrying about. You may also teach her to challenge the validity of her worries by practicing debate. Let her debate against her own thoughts by letting her say out loud her arguments. This is not only fun but it also teaches her to be more aware of every thought that enters her mind. If your child’s anxiety is becoming more frequent and more difficult to deal with despite all the efforts you did to help him cope with it, consult a professional. Never let your child’s anxiety to spiral out of control. Otherwise, it will develop into a full-blown disorder that is tougher to deal with.
A Letter To My Fellow Anxiety Sufferers
You may not know me, and I don’t know who you are. But one thing is for sure, we all suffer from the same affliction--anxiety. I’ll start my letter by saying anxiety is dangerous and harmful. It is not only dangerous and harmful to the person who is suffering but also to the people who are surrounding the person. Anxiety is something that shouldn’t be overlooked. It is a struggle internally and since this is within, it remains something that is restricted and never really discussed with others. There are people who cares these are the people who may form a support network. Yet, there are those who may not have an idea what is going on. The person suffering may not have an idea on what he or she is dealing with. They may not be able to comprehend the situation. People who are not anxious may be oblivious about the situation an anxious person is experiencing. When a person is anxious--there is too much overthinking. The overthinking makes it hard for them to talk to you. While the anxiety problem may be largely invisible, without much physical symptoms to boot--there’s something wrong--awfully wrong. It is all about an irrational panic for something that may or may not be there is the first place. To deal with the anxiety, the key thing is to recognize that you have one. Having an anxiety disorder does not mean the end of the line for you. There are tons of ways to deal with too much thinking and the specter in life which may or may not be there in the first place. Dealing with anxiety is dealing with the complexity of life. If you think about the things that you have to do, you may end up overwhelmed. This is surely something that only makes the anxiety worse. Perhaps, it is best to slow down and simplify things in your life. Take one step at a time, and move at a pace where you are most comfortable at. Don’t let things pile up and make your anxiety worse. Of course there are medications that you can take. There will be times the world will seem to be wrong. Everyone will make a mistake. Focus your attention on what you can correct. The world is filled of what ifs and there is too little you can do about it. You need to accept the fact you will make mistakes, and that is fine. Nobody’s perfect anyway. The good thing with being anxious is that there is hope. There are people that know what you’re going through and there is medication that you can take. When things become too overwhelming, try to compose yourself and ask for a moment. There could be a disconnect between the world and you need to be able to see it. This is the only way you can overcome the suffering of anxiety. The bottom line of this letter is that there is hope. There are people who can help you and they will be there when you go through the rigors of overcoming the anxiety problem. Sincerely yours, Another anxiety sufferer
