Giving a gift to celebrating one of the biggest moments of a friend/family member’s life is simply a gesture of love and celebration, good manners, and, as paulveep said, a sign that you’re not a cheap asshole. Stop complaining or don’t go.

Couldn’t they comprise and agree to say, “he manages the fast food chain but is also an aspiring pilot”? There are clearly deeper issues here - this man is insecure and also doesn’t treat his wife’s profession with as much respect as he wants for his pilot training.
