Well, Aziz Ansari made the choice after living in Modena, Italy, where the first two episodes of Master of None's new season are set (yes, he lived there).

At a Shortlist TV Club event in London last week, Ansari said: "After we finished Season 1, I was like, 'I should go live in Italy for a couple of months and kind of try to do what this character did.'

"One, because it would be, like, good research and also as a good excuse for me to really do that."

"When I was there I had a film camera that takes pictures, and I shot some rolls in black and white and I shot some rolls in colour. And when I looked at the black-and-white rolls I thought: Wow, this city looks really good in black and white."

"I showed it to Alan [Yang], our director, and our director of photography, Mark [Schwartzbard], and we started coming up with the idea of doing it in black and white."

Ansari said that shooting in this way was a rare opportunity "because usually people are like, 'No, you can't do it in black and white. Kids don’t want to see things in black and white. We want colours.'"

"I thought, This is a rare opportunity, Netflix will let us do this, we have to do it. So we asked them and I wasn't sure they would be into it, but they were like, 'Sure, that makes sense, it seems organic to what you are doing.' And it looks good."

"Things look good in black and white."
