7 Vegetarian Meat Substitutes That Taste Better Than The Real Deal

Bean burgers are so 2000-and-late.

1. Quorn Scotch Eggs

All the flavours of a British picnic on a lukewarm summer's day, served up in a little ball of bread-crumbed peppery goodness. It is VERY easy to get through an entire pack of these little eggs in one sitting -- and I always crave more! They're comforting, bite-size, and unlike some cheap supermarket meat equivalents contain absolutely no offal. What's not to love?

2. Linda McCartney Vegetarian Mozzarella Quarter Pounders

It's been a long time since I actually tasted a real burger, but I can safely say these are plenty better than what's served up in a lot of fast food restaurants. They're juicy, brown and delicious, and perfect to combine with all your favourite burger toppings. I usually pump for grilled pineapple, barbeque sauce and loads of salad -- plus extra cheese because why the hell not.

3. Supermarket Baked Beans & Vegetarian Sausages

These are an important addition to any serious vegetarian fry-up. I had been lamenting the lack of vegetarian sausages combined with beans in my life, till one day -- lo-and-behold! -- there they were in all there glory. My favourite way to have these is in a puffed pastry pasty with lots of cheese; a homage to Greggs' Sausage Bean & Cheese melt. Thank me later.

4. Linda McCartney Vegetarian Shredded Hoisin Duck

That Linda must be an astronaut, because these veggie/vegan treats she keeps coming out with are truly out of this world! This veggie duck substitute is perfect for adding to a stir-fry for easy and instantaneous deliciousness. The texture's great, the sauce is perfect, and it's low in sat-fat. Ideal for easy dinners.

5. Quorn Hot Dogs

I have a sneaking suspicion that the reason Quorn hotdogs taste so similar to tinned or jarred 'dogs is simply because the meat quantity of the actual thing is so low. WHATEVER, these rule. They take sauce like a champ and the texture is spot-on. Best served with fries, salad, and a springy white bun.

6. Quorn cocktail sausages

Yes, there is a lot of Quorn on this list, but then there is a lot of Quorn to be had. Plus, these little picnic sausages (like the eggs) are just so damn moreish! I chop 'em up and stick them on pizzas as an alternative to boring old artichoke-laden 'Veggie Deluxe'. Delish, delish, delish.

7. Linda McCartney Red Onion & Rosemary Sausage Plaits

This was a toughie. Linda McCartney sausage rolls are (probably) world-renowned. Yet for me, this calorific sausage pastry plait combo wins hands down. Think moist, herby soy sausage working perfectly within a crisp and golden pastry braid. Hells yeah. As well as working well on its own, it's perfect as an addition to a vegetarian roast, going great with all the accoutrements and most importantly -- horseradish.
