Whether you want to get back into reading or you're a big reader looking for your next fun find, we've got recs!
What it's about: Formatted not like a novel, but like a series of interviews stitched together to make one grand narrative, Daisy Jones & The Six tells the story of an extremely talented young songwriter and the established rock band she becomes involved with in 1970s Los Angeles. Daisy Jones tactfully jumps between characters to weave a story that takes us from the lowest of lows to the highest of high success; we're talking infidelity, groupies, messy relationships, parties at the Chateau Marmont; but most importantly, we're talking really great music.
Who it's perfect for: Fast-paced, high quality, and easy to read, this book is perfect for everyone from teenagers dreaming of stardom to dads reminiscing on what they always tell us is the last era of truly great music. Plus, catch the upcoming Prime Video miniseries, set for release on March 3rd!
What it's about: A group of friends at an elite acting conservatory finds that in their final year, rivalries and secrets are rearing their ugly heads — and maybe some amongst them have gotten a little too into character. Relationships that have been reliable and friendly for years, have become hostile and twisted; none of the friends know who out of the others can really be trusted. The competition is stiff, and when it comes down to it, the people closest to them might turn out to be the ones they know the least. But they're all just in a play — it's not like anybody is going to murder anyone. Right?
Who it's perfect for: For fans of dark academia, M.L. Rio's 2017 masterpiece hits the nail on the head.
What it's about: From the author of Shadow and Bone, comes a new and different twist on the fantasy novel. Ever heard of those secret societies at elite East Coast universities? Well, Alex Stern is a Yale freshman discovering those societies for the first time, and discovering that they're, well, magical. Only she's just about the worst person for the job. A girl from Los Angeles with just about the roughest background you can imagine, Alex feels that she really has no place at Yale — but curiously enough, they recruited her. Turns out she has a very special ability — but will her power be enough to save the important institutions that keep the New Haven elites in power? And perhaps more importantly — will Alex want to save them?
Who it's perfect for: Readers of secret society and academia fictional novels will eat this one up. It's equal parts dark academia and Gossip Girl.
What it's about: Funny from the first page, Honey and Spice follows Kiki Banjo, a student at Whitewell University, who buzzes about love and romance (or rather her rejection of it) on her uni's radio show, Brown Sugar. But the witty Kiki can't spurn love forever, and things start to get messy when she finds herself kissing the man she's publicly renounced. Worse — she does it in front of people. To save face, Kiki enters into a fake relationship — one of the best tropes, like, ever — and finds (to her chagrin) that romance can be surprising, joyful, and, well, fun!
Who it's perfect for: It's must-read novel for anyone who isn't so sure about love or anyone looking for the romance read of the summer! The New York Times called it "sexy, messy, and wry," Romance fans, rejoice!
What it's about: Kira Navárez is just doing her job. In fact, she's doing her last job, before she settles down for a quiet life with her fiancé. But unfortunately for Kira, her job is on another planet. And when she accidentally wakes a long-gone alien force, she finds that she's just launched herself into the middle of a war.
Who it's perfect for: If you love long, juicy reads, this is the sci-fi novel for you. Famous for his fantasy series Eragon, Christopher Paolini delves tactfully into his first sci-fi novel, bringing us into a world — no, a galaxy — where the plot will surprise you at every turn. And there are a lot of turns. Alien forces, great world-building, found family — what's not to like? You'll fly right through this fast-paced space opera.
