Why Everyone Should Know About Denim Day

    What constitutes rape?

Italy 1992, an 18 year old girl got ready for her driving lesson. What she didn't know that in those coming hours she would be faced with the most fearful event of her life. Driven to a deserted road, forced out of her jeans, and raped. She later pressed charges and her rapist was convicted and sentenced. However, the Italian Supreme Court believed that because the girl wore very tight jeans, she must have helped him remove the pants, in turn making it consensual sex. Outraged by such statements, the women of the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in honor of the victim. In 1997, Patricia Giggans founded the Denim Day LA and USA campaign. Over the past seventeen years, Denim Day has become a "national movement." Every year, one Wednesday in April is chosen as Denim Day and millions of women wear jeans in response to the injustices of this case. That is why I challenge you to learn more about sexual violence, to take a stand against rape, and empower women to feel safe. "There is No Excuse and Never An Invitation To Rape."
