The Things Literature Does For Our World

Mermaids! Wizards! Ogres! All things that can be found in literature. What would the world would be like without it? Well that's a different story

Posted on

When was the last time you couldn't take your eyes off of a book you were reading?

Literature is entertaining and occupies our time when we have nothing more to do, but what we don't realize is that literature does more than just that. It isn't just a silly game on your phone or a short little movie. Literature has real substance to it. It has incredible details so you can visualize everything you're reading clearly.

Literature isn't just a bunch of words on a page that create a story. It has a much deeper meaning.

Yes, you will get smarter and expand your vocabulary by reading, but that isn't the reason why literature exists (most of the time). Literature is here to teach humans a lesson or a moral. This sometimes happens by passing down stories. Look at the bible for example. It's entirely compiled of stories and they all teach us a lesson. Whether they are over exaggerated or not, we don't know, but in the end the lesson that is taught will always be the same and will help us as humans to understand how to get through the challenges in our lives. It helps us to learn from other peoples mistakes and it even guides us when were in tough situations. Literature is also used for letting your imagination run free. It is where we get most of our ideas from.

I have composed a list of some of my favourite books and I want to share them with anyone reading this article right now. These are the reasons why I believe that literature makes our world a better place.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I stay is a novel about a girl who's entire family dies in a car crash and while she is in a coma, she gets to see herself from an outer perspective. She gets the option to fight and stay or to go. Reading this book made me appreciate life so much more than I already do because it brought to my attention the different struggles that people may face throughout their lives. It made me think about how fortunate I have been to not have gone through many situations similar to this before. Literature that is written about situations like these help people to see things from different perspectives and cherish what they have now. They also guide other people going through similar situations to understand that they are not alone. Throughout the novel, the main character has flashbacks back to before the car crash that show all the good moments that she remembers from throughout her life. These flashbacks make the story more relatable and make it easier to see what it would be like if you were in her position. Books similar to these make the world a better place because they help people to realize all the good that they have in their lives. It tells people to live every day like it's your last because you never know what tomorrow will bring. By appreciating things more people will be happier and will experience so much more instead of being afraid to take a risk. It will help people to be more satisfied of what they have accomplished in the end. It also comfort people in similar situations to know that in the end it will all be okay.

Sonnet 24 by William Shakespeare

This sonnet written by William Shakespeare is one of the most famous sonnets that he has written. I had to read it a few times before I really understood the meaning behind it. It talks about how he enjoys the genuiness and the beauty in the youth. He also talks about the beauty that only he can see in someone. Poetry is different compared to other literature. It stands out the most. With poetry, the reader interprets things in their own ways and it is the easiest to relate to ones own feelings. This sonnet in particular was easy to relate to because I sometimes see beauty in things that other people may not. Poetry like this makes some people see what beauty they are missing out on in the world and helps people to see what they have been missing out on. By seeing all the beauty of the world, people can live happier lives. This is what is so special about poetry because it helps people to realize their own feelings and can produce strong emotions inside someone.

Snuggle Puppy by Sandra Boynton

When I was a little girl my mom used to constantly read this book to me. I had a whole collection of Sandra Boynton children's books but this quickly became one of my favourite ones out of all. It doesn't have many words throughout the book but of the words that it does have there is a deeper meaning behind them. The book revolves around a mother dog and a puppy and all the things they do together. The main lines that are repeated are "I love what you are. I love what you do. Fuzzy little snuggle puppy, I love you.". Another line that is repeated is "I say, ooo snuggle puppy of mine! Everything about you is especially fine!". This book is good to read especially for children because it teaches them confidence and shows them love at a very young age. The love that it demonstrates shows kids that their parents will always protect them by showing support and being there for them no matter what they do. Children see this as unconditional love from their parents but it also applies to teenagers as well. This book for teens not only says that their parents will be supportive of what they grow up to do but it also shows that people will love them no matter who they are. The message says that it is important for people to stay themselves and that they don't have to change for anyone else. This is especially relevant to teenagers once dating and popularity becomes important to some of them in high school. I find it very interesting how the book can be so simple and have very few words yet it can have such a deep meaning and a big picture to it. Books similar to this one make the world a better place because children will see this unconditional love and want to give as much as they receive because they will understand the importance of it and they will be confident in who they are. The relationship between the mom and the pup will also help us to realize that we need to spend as much time and cherish the precious moments that we get with our moms and dads before we have to move away and start families of our own.

Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton, Rick Bundschuh, and Sheryl Berk

The book Soul Surfer is based off of a true story. It is truly inspirational and makes me feel as though I can do anything that I set my mind to. Bethany Hamilton was a victim of a shark attack and she lost her entire arm because of it. As a result of this she was unable to do simple tasks but that didn't stop her. She continued to compete in her surfing competitions and learned how to do things in new ways. As readers, we learn how people have to cope with things such as these when they reach obstacles in their lives. Hearing there stories gives us insight on what it would be like in these situations. It teaches people to keep persevering and never give up because anyone can accomplish anything as long as they stay positive and hopeful. Stories like these also help us to learn how to comfort people that we may be close to in situations like these. I could especially connect to this book because I have had to overcome some obstacles that had the same effect on me as it did on Bethany, but I didn't give up. Reading inspirational stories like these make the world a better place by showing people that no matter how bad it gets, something good will always come out of it in the end. It teaches people to continue preserving and never quit and to be thankful for what they have.

What was I scared of? by Dr. Suess

What was I scared of was another childhood favourite of mine. The plot of the book is quite simple but it also has components of mystery and wonder. In the end, the creature and the pair of pants meet each other and once they do they both realize that they aren't the only ones scared. It is a funny way to teach people, especially children, another lesson. The lesson that is taught in this book is not to judge someone before you know who they are or what they've been through. Although the other "person" is actually a pair of pants, it still displays the moral in a way for kids to understand. Not only does it teach this lesson but it also helps to keep creativity alive and to let kids minds roam. Lessons similar to these that are being taught in children books are very important because it helps kids to grow into understanding and mature adults with morals and values. Literature is put in place to teach these morals in a way for children to understand. Not only does this book teach children not to judge people before getting to know them, but it also has a twist of humour behind it as well. I remember when I was a child and my parents used to read this book to me I would laugh so hard because I thought the idea of a living pair of pants was hilarious. Reading this book gave me joy and made me happy.

The Diary of Anne Frank

Anne Frank's Diary is a marvellous and interesting thing from the past. It is filled with everything that she does throughout the course World War II. This book gives us a lot of insight and knowledge of what was happening and what people were going through during this harsh time period. It helps us to understand what people were doing during this war and gives us enough information to know how to prevent it from happening again. Anne Frank's diary is like no other form of literature about WWII. This is because her story is so much more personal and we know for a fact that everything written down here is what actually happened and could not have been mis-interpreted through the generations. This is the difference between her written diary and stories passed down through word of mouth. The feelings that were written down in this book were authentic and it shows us the tragedy of innocent people dying such as Anne Frank and her family. This book makes our world a better place because it gives us so much knowledge and information from the past. This book will also make people realize how lucky they are to be living in such a wonderful place where they don't wake up every day scared that it is their last day on this world. It will help people to be more positive about their lives and appreciate the little things. So many people are living in negativity and spending most of their energy on the bad things in life but books like these change that.

Ultimately, literature is something that will be with us forever. It has never failed to make the world a better place and through generations has taught people important lessons and morals. There is always new and entertaining books and poems that continue to be written and it is something that will never go out of date. They will continue to have us excited about an action scene or sad because of a plot twist in a romantic novel. Literature teaches us to live in the moment and love everything that you have because you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to. They remind us of all the beauty in life that there is to appreciate every single day. It even teaches us valuable lessons from the past that we can learn not to repeat in the future. Say, maybe 50 years from now there will be a book written about Donald Trump and what not to do if you become president. Literature doesn't only teach us lessons but it gives us joy and happiness too. Overall, without literature, the world would be completely different and it makes the world a much better place.
