Adam Kay's Wild Memoir "This Is Going To Hurt" Is Being Adapted Into A TV Series, And Here's What To Expect

    It's time to get real about being a doctor.

    Filming has wrapped on new hospital-based drama This Is Going to Hurt, which will examine in detail the laugh-out-loud highs and gut-wrenching lows of life as a doctor.

    The seven-part series is created, written, and executive produced by Adam Kay, author of the hugely successful 2017 memoir of the same name, which the show is based on.

    If you've read Adam's book, you'll know that it's truly WILD. In it, Adam recounts through diary entires that he made at the time his experience working as an overstretched junior doctor for the NHS from 2004 to 2010.

    At times hilarious and at times devastating, the book describes incidents like the first time Adam delivered a baby, the time he had to retrieve a Kinder Egg a woman had inserted inside herself and couldn't get back out, and the time a hungover colleague fainted onto the patient being operated on during surgery.

    The consistently underrated Ben Whishaw will lead the cast as Adam, a doctor juggling 97-hour weeks, life-and-death decisions, and terrible pay, all while trying desperately to maintain some kind of personal life.

    Harriet Walter (Killing Eve, The Crown, Succession) will play Adam’s mother; Rory Fleck Byrne (Harlots, Vita and Virginia, Ghosts) plays his boyfriend Harry; and Tom Durant-Pritchard (Feel Good, The Windsors, Judy, The Crown) plays Adam’s best friend Greg.

    Ben is joined by newcomer Ambika Mod as Shruti, a young junior doctor just starting in obstetrics and gynaecology.

    Other cast members include Michele Austin (Meet the Richardsons, The Casual Vacancy) as midwife Tracy; BAFTA-nominated Kadiff Kirwan (Chewing Gum, This Way Up, The Stranger) as Julian, Adam's professional rival; Ashley McGuire (This Country, Malory Towers, It’s A Sin) as consultant Miss Houghton; and Alex Jennings (The Crown, A Very English Scandal, Unforgotten, The Lady in the Van) as Mr Lockhart, Adam’s domineering boss.

    The series will launch on BBC One and iPlayer, and will also air on AMC in the US. There's no word yet on when it will be available, but we'll keep you updated!
